Over in the Tenleytown list server, somebody named Luke2008 is being accused of encouraging voters to write in Linda Cropp and Theresa Conroy in November with the arguments that if Independents and Republicans do such, they could defeat Fenty and Cheh. I thought Luke20008 was another one of Bfrank's screen names!

It was reported as a post primary matter that both Rice and Strauss had gone overboard with about 10 mailings to voters within the last week, non-stop robo-calling and this really ticked voters off. -

Last weekend, Rees asked his supporters to give their vote to either Robert Gordon or Paul Strauss to increase their chances. Rees is probably the richest of all of the ward 3 candidates so when only putting up $500, it stands to reason it was just a game he was playing. -
Greetings Ward 3 Businesss and Voters: My name is Jonathan R. Rees and I am running for the ward 3 city council seat because I believe that I can better represent the values and views of the Residents and Business Owners of Ward 3. In 2006, the voters of ward 3 made a serious mistake by voting in Mary Cheh after buying all the media and other hype that she was the next Kathy Patterson but her tenure on our city council will sadly prove that she is not, but more liking to Sharon Pratt-Kelly in all that she does and fails to do on the city council. I believe that my more than 24 years of lobbying and management experience in the food, health care and legislative industries, has given me the experience needed to be an effective council member. I want the residents of Ward 3 to have a Council Member who represents them which Mary Cheh has already shown she will not do by whom she aligned herself with. I am "that" person who will do for you what Mary Cheh will fail to do as I will not do what Mary Cheh has; namely, I will not stab the businesses and voters in the back and cave in to special interest groups as she did late in her 2006, campaign. In 2006, Mary Cheh won the Democrats’ nomination by the (smallest percentage) of any candidate to be nominated in ward 3, and that is because, most of you saw her as not being the best choice, not shooting straight and being in the pockets of GWU and people who want to over-develop ward 3. When I ran in the 2006, primary, I did so more as a test run by only spending $500.00, use of the internet and friends but for the 2010 primary, I will be heavily financed, heavily backed on the streets of ward 3 and build alliances of people who did not vote for Mary Cheh. If you are one of the 24,000 Democrats in ward 3 who did not vote for or want to see Mary Cheh as our next Council Member and think we can do better, then contact me now so together we can build a strong opposition to her and in 2010 make her a one term council member. Contact me at jrrees2006@verizon.net and let’s begin early to build an alliance to make sure that Mary Cheh is a one term council member! Respectfully yours, Jonathan R. Rees

Bfrank, You are missing a point about Vincent Gray or many. Gray still wants that new hospital east of the River. Gray does not want that $1 billion to be given to the schools until DC gets control over the schools from Congress. Gray was a bit heavy in his support and wording favoring Gordon over Cheh. Gray was being backed by Herb Miller and his friends, and they funded most of the attacks against Cheh via Rice and others, and I suspect that Gray will give Cheh no committees but keep her in the back drop of all council matters and maybe try to trip her so in 2010 she can be replaced by another Herb Miller ally. It has nothing to do with all you said no matter how valid what you say is but many council members infight all the time.
-
Vincent Gray before endorsing Robert Gordon said that while Mary Cheh has a lot of appeal, she would probably prove in time to be a great disappointment to the voters of ward 3; That council members like Barry, Brown, Evans and others will chew her alive; and that she will not be able to get much done because of her greenhorn status. After Gray said such in public, he tossed his support to Robert Gordon.

FRD lost his first two elections and became US President. JFK lost his first election but became a US Senator and US President. LBJ lost his first three elections and became US Senator and US President. Nixon lost his first election .... ditto. Bill Clinton lost his first election and became US President. GW Bush lost his first two elections and became US President.

Did you see that bogus Post poll giving Cheh 27% of the votes in the ward 3 race? That poll was taken on July 13-18, in the 20008 zip code area and only 200 people were questioned! Most of the 20008 zip is Mary Cheh's neighborhood. Political experts say that polls are subject to the buyers biases and voters should look at who is paying for those polls to see how inaccurate they are. All of the Post's preferred candidates got better poll results. Anyway, this poll was taken before all the Cheh controversies began. THE WASHINGTON POST WANTS TO PICK OUR LEADERS FOR US AND THAT IS WHY THEY THROW UP BOGUS POLL RESULTS THAT THEY TAINTED. THIS IS AN INSULT TO THE INTELLIGENCE OF VOTERS. LET THE VOTERS DECIDE AND NOT HAVE THE WASHINGTON POST MAKE US ACCEPT THEIR PREFERRED CANDIDATES.

CITY PAPER SAYS DON'T VOTE FOR BROOKS, GAULL, RICE or STRAUSS WARD 3 Too often during this political season, commentators have talked about an embarrassment of riches in the Ward 3 council race. bullcrap. Voters in the city’s wealthiest ward will find their champion through process of elimination. Paul Strauss: This man is currently the city’s shadow U.S. senator, an unpaid position responsible for lobbying Capitol Hill for D.C. Statehood. It’s a joke of a position. If Strauss somehow won the Ward 3 race, the elections board would be in the unprecedented position of having to organize a special election for a shadow senator. No way, Paul. LL is very sad to purge Bill Rice. He has written for the Washington City Paper, and his propensity for gossip is unrivaled among true D.C. political geeks. Rice entered the race after resigning his post as spokesperson for the D.C. Department of Transportation, and as a candidate, he’s adopted the kind of ridiculous bravado he’s mocked in others. His campaign lit stated, “Only Bill Rice can fix the D.C. Schools.” He touted his experience at DDOT by saying that as spokesman he was intimately involved in a turnaround of that agency. Sorry, Bill. Sam Brooks is a smart and energetic guy. But Brooks’ second run, after moving a few blocks into Ward 3 in January, only proves what worries LL about the young hunk: Brooks is desperate to get elected to something because he wants to get elected to something. Get a job for a few years, Sam. Erik Gaull failed to sell voters on his long résumé of public-safety bona fides. He joins Rice in the trying-a-little-bit-too-hard-for-his-own-good club. See you during the 2010 election, Erik.

Today, the trash cans in the mailrooms of a lot of apartment buildings are filled up with campaign literature from Kathy Patterson, Paul Strauss (2 mailings), Mary Cheh and Robert Gordon according to my point people in 60 of such buildings. It seems, voters are annoyed with all these mailings and are trashing them without even opening them up. Robert Gordon’s mailer was the best done one, and Mary Cheh’s is the worst as there was no picture of her on it and you would have to look hard to see it was from her campaign. Furthermore, most members of the DCFD do not live in DC and ditto for most of the membership of the Sierra Club. Paul Strauss’ letter wants everyone to believe that he is being supported by tenants and tenant groups despite the fact TENAC endorsed Bill Rice. Yet, Kathy Patterson’ joint-mailer has her teaming up with A. Scott Bolden over her old friend Phil Mendelson!

The Washington Post has endorsed Adrian Fenty for mayor whereas the Washington Times has endorsed Marie Johns. Historically, the Washington Post has the worst track record of endorsing. Eight of the last ten endorsees lost their political races. Both papers agree that Linda Cropp would be the safe choice and would keep us on track with the agenda of the Williams administration. My fears of a Fenty administration are: 1. Most sitting council members say they cannot work with Fenty and that could result in the council voting down most of what Fenty proposes; 2. Congressional leaders have little or no confidence or respect for Fenty and would be likely to abolish "home rule" if he gets elected and DC faces serious problems; and 3. Fenty more than any other candidate would be likely to test Congress and risk our future for statehood, a vote in Congress and more.

THE TRUTH ABOUT KATHY PATTERSON Kathy Patterson is one of the few council members who does not have an outside job, but is also one of the council members who has spent more time working at home and not down at the John Wilson Building. Also, Kathy Patterson is rarely seen in public unlike her colleagues. I think the reason is summed up in the following story. http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20060901/hl_hs...tollonworkplace

MARY CHEH BEHIND INTERNET SMEAR CAMPAIGN?
Psycho replied to Psycho's topic in District of Columbia Politics
Wrong Bfrandc Cathy Wiss, Paul Strauss and Robert Gordon all said that they suspected and had some evidence that supporters of Mary Cheh were behind the attacks on them. -
Mary Cheh Behind Internet Smear Campaign? From: J F [mailto:dc20015@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2006 6:37 AM To: jrrees2006@verizon.net Subject: Mary Cheh's campaign is behind the current internet smear campaign. Dear Mr. Rees, I posted this over on the Tenleytown list server: Ward 3 candidate Jonathan Rees last night sent me an email asking that I point out that I am not him, and Brian Summer should have the decency to do the same. Mr. Rees says that some in the Tenleytown list server are accusing him of posting there when I know he is not using my name. I believe that Mr. Rees limits his postings to places that better serve his needs like DC Watch and other politically in tuned venues. I’ll admit that I am going to vote for him only because, when you read what he says, it is more from the heart, better thought out and he does not try and BS the media as others like Mary Cheh, Bill Rice or Paul Strauss have been doing, and his platform is more realistic and well rounded. If you want to grab a real poster using anonymous names to attack people, then look at Mary Cheh’s chief Anne-Marie Bairstow who has used many screen names to attack three of the ward 3 candidates and they have been linked to her IP address here on this list server as well as on several list servers she created like ward3notes which is now inactive. Ms. Bairstow attacks on Mr. Rees and others all originated from the server at the PN Hoffman Company IP Address 209.249.238.50 where Mary Cheh now has her campaign headquarters. Sorry to say, but Mary Cheh appears to be behind the online attacks against Mr. Rees, Mr. Strauss and Ms. Wiss on various list servers.

MAY THE BETTER LIAR WIN – RICE, STRAUSS, CHEH OR BROOKS In the ward 3 race, I am surprised that Daddy Big Bucks Bill Rice would stoop so low to numerous mail outs that are packed with one lie after another, and people I know are commenting about it asking does Bill Rice think the voters of ward 3 are out to lunch and do not know him? Bill Rice has laid claim to: 1. Mayor Williams called upon him to help fix D.DOT and listing all that he did which is untrue; 2. That he is the only one who has the experience and know how to fix our schools but for the last 32 years he has been a resident of ward 3, how come he hasn’t previously lifted a finger to do such; and 3. People I know that are very active at and with TENAC cannot remember a day that Bill Rice helped people with affordable housing or any other matter, but Bill Rice claims that he has been for years a real activist. Thus they are wondering why the leadership at TENAC endorsed him! Bill Rice is not the only ward 3 candidate that speaks with a fork tongue. James Jones A/k/a Loose Lips of the Washington City Paper has a few choice words for ward 3 candidate Paul Strauss when he wrote on July 14, 2006:”The Best Overstatement Shadow senators have no power whatsoever. But the hand card offered up by Ward 3 council candidate and Shadow Sen. Paul Strauss tells a different story: His service as a nonvoting advocate in the Senate “achieved incredible results in the face of a hostile Republican Congress.” Voters who pick up the Strauss card will learn that he “successfully fought Republican efforts to repeal DC’s gun safety laws.” Strauss may have been in the room but parents won the day.” James Jones went on to say that nothing Paul Strauss claims he has done he ever did. Also, James Jones A/k/a Loose Lips of the Washington City Paper has a few choice words for ward 3 candidate Mary Cheh finding her to lack any credibility and adding in the fact that she is a seasoned lawyer and law professor made her the best liar of them all when he wrote: “There’s nothing like a few glowing testimonials from high-profile friends to boost a political neophyte’s credibility. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to tack a few recognizable names or organizations onto your campaign lit. Ward 3 council hopeful Mary Cheh has some sweet endorsements on her literature and a mailing that she figures ended up in the hands of about 15,000 residents. Nan Aron, executive director of the Alliance for Justice, says she admires Cheh’s “fierce dedication to fairness, equal rights, and civil liberties.” Cheh is called “a phenomenal friend of animals and all who love and care for them,” by Washington Humane Society Executive Director Howard Nelson. Renee DeVigne, one of the deans of George Washington University Law School, where Cheh teaches, says that “tudents love professor Cheh…because she inspires them to care about their community.” These community leaders have something in common beyond their praise for Cheh: They all work for nonprofit organizations barred by the Internal Revenue Service from involvement in partisan political activities. Cheh appears to have overlooked that part of the IRS code. She not only included approved accolades from friends on her mailing but also listed their titles and organizations. Her lit did not include a disclaimer distancing those quoted from their organizations. Nelson, who says he hasn’t seen the literature, calls the naming of his organization an error. “It certainly was not authorized.” He characterized his endorsement as “a personal quote. It actually has nothing to do with the Washington Humane Society or my role at WHS.” Nelson seems to have a good grasp of the IRS code. “We are a 501©(3), and we never participate in any political campaigns.” He’s e-mailed Cheh asking her to “remove the quote or subtext it, like on her Web site.” It’s a little too late for adding disclaimers, unless he expects Cheh to go rooting through every mailbox from Cleveland Park to Palisades. It’s not as if Cheh didn’t know that the use of the quotes with organizations needed to be explained to protect her friends from IRS scrutiny. All the statements were approved, but below all the quotes on her Web site, Cheh gives the reader this message: “(*Affiliations are listed for informational purposes only.)” Cheh would have been wise to take a peak at the Alliance for Justice Web site. The group’s nonprofit advocacy project is designed to give tax-exempt organizations “a better understanding of the laws that govern their participation in the policy process.” It even includes a little fact sheet. Check item No. 1 under how an organization can protect itself from violating the laws governing political activity: “Requir[e] officers...acting as individuals engaged in partisan political activity to clearly state that they are acting in their individual capacity, not on behalf of the organization...” After the Cheh campaign was contacted by the Washington City Paper, this message was posted on her Web site: “A recent mailing from my campaign included quotes from people who were identified with their institutional affiliations. There was no attempt to suggest that these were endorsements from the institutions themselves. But since there was no specific disclaimer, the reference to designations could have left that impression with someone. I regret that, although, again, this was not the intent nor do I think anyone would reasonably believe that the designations were anything more than information identifying who was making the statement. To avoid even possible ambiguity, all future mailings will have specific disclaimers.” Cheh might have been surprised that any reasonable person might see the endorsements as, well, endorsements, but she was quick to lay blame on her own campaign. “I screwed up, what can I say?” Yet, in the ward 3 race when it comes to who is the better liar, ward 3 candidate Sam Brooks could have done a better job of covering up his lie when talking to the Washington City Paper as they wrote” •Ward 3 contender Sam Brooks is all about being different. He’s young, new to the ward, full of new ideas, and now certainly a new kind of Democrat who doesn’t mind pissing off the unions. Brooks is the first candidate in the race to benefit from an independent expenditure from a political action committee openly hostile to labor. Red, white, and blue fliers that look strangely similar to Brooks’ own campaign lit have been distributed around the ward carrying the disclaimer: “Paid for by Citizens for Empowerment PAC.” The PAC is funded by gigantic concrete maker Miller & Long and electrical contractor MC Dean. Both companies are open shops and help fund the political opposition to the city’s stadium-project labor agreement, which gave preference for construction contracts to union companies. The flier is pretty standard fare and carries Brooks’ signature “new” ideas of creating a commission on school closings and splitting Emergency Medical Services from the fire department. But a new bullet point is tacked onto the end: “Fair and Open Bidding: allowing union and nonunion companies the same rights to compete for construction work.” Brooks says he had no idea the mailing was about to hit the streets. He did meet with the PAC board along with several other Ward 3 candidates.

TEAM REES TO DISTRIBUTE CROPP FOR MAYOR LITERATURE
Psycho replied to Psycho's topic in District of Columbia Politics
Nelson's representations are half accurate. Despite the offer which Mrs. Cropp accepted and Phyllis Jones' action, I emailed Mrs. Cropp asking what is up with Ms. Jones' not honoring what you agreed to? Shortly thereafter, somebody dropped off at my place a box full of Linda Cropp's brochures whereby my people have already given them out at the Fresh Foods in Spring Valley, Giant in the Cathedral area and the Safeway in Chevy Chase. These brochures were dropped off in the same manner Nelson dropped off the yard signs. Voters said thanks as this was the first time they have seen any Linda Cropp literature being given out in public. -

Give us the name of that so called high ranking staffer at the Cropp camp. I see Rees and his people every morning putting up along the roads Linda Cropp signs and more but more so along Wisconsin Avenue. I hate liars who come here and lie just for the sake of showing themselves as liars.
