  1. Here are some Alito jokes to lighten things up. Supreme Court confirmation hearings are under way for Judge Samuel Alito. It's pretty interesting. Democrats want to know his position on privacy, while Republicans want to know his position on prison terms for bribery." --Jay Leno "The American Bar Association gave Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito their highest rating. President Bush gave Alito his highest rating, too, because he called him 'Super' and 'Duper.'" --Conan O'Brien
  2. Hi Melinda, How do you know this woman?
  3. Doesn't anyone think that mudslinging will get nowhere? I just hate it when people get so heated up in politics that they forget about the important issues. I guess that is what I get waiting for my date who is over 40 minutes late. Just type the time away... what is your excuse
  4. In my opinion... A good council member should think about the economic repercussion of every bill before it goes public. That is just plain common sense. But, then again I am a Manhattan girl living in a third world city. Another thing... When is the District going to revamp their DMV? I think it is a disgrace to our Capitol City.
  5. Maybe Mr. Rees wants to explore all media channels.
  6. Mr Rees, What is your position on the D.C. government's demand that propery owners give up their land for the District's proposed Major League Baseball stadium.
  7. Ok you guys can send those tickets to me. Look at my wonderful posts.
  8. New York Times reporter Judith Miller left a federal courthouse Friday after testifiying before a grand jury about her sources in the investigation into the White House role in the leak of a CIA operative's identity. "Believe me, I did not want to be in jail. But I would have stayed even longer," Miller said, escorted by her lawyers and New York Times Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., adding that she was looking forward to seeing her dog and spending time with her family. "I served 85 days in jail because of my belief in the importance of upholding the confidential relationship that journalists have with their sources," Miller told reporters outside the federal courthouse. Miller left an Alexandria, Va., detention center Thursday evening once her source, identified by the Times as I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, had released her from a promise of confidentiality. Miller was jailed in July for civil contempt of court when she refused to testify.
  9. Oh my God, what is she thinking? She should be thinking of her daughter, he is not exactly the ideal role model - a junkie rockstar. I thought she had more sense to be honest. I think Jefferson Hack would have done her much more good, I feel really sorry for him.
  10. A friend sent this to me. I bet Tom is a good monopoly player.
  11. Let me state that I have only been a District resident for two years now. In that time I have gained alot of respect for DC's sexiest man. He cleaned up the city and left its citizens with a positive cash flow. Now its time for you to gain some wealth. ******************************************************************* Let me begin by thanking all of my supporters and everyone for coming out here today. Seven years ago, on beautiful Kingman Island, not far from here, I began my candidacy for Mayor of the District of Columbia. Most of us remember the state of our city on that day. We were under the thumb of the Control Board. We were bankrupt — our finances a wreck. We lost 5,000 residents every year. Too many of our agencies languished in receivership. City services, like garbage pickup and street paving, were abysmal. Potholes sat unfilled. Our DMV was long on lines, short on service. Telephones would ring unanswered, and customer service was unheard of. Revenues were down. Spending was out of control. Our downtown was a ghost town, a place people feared after dark. As a city, we were closed for business. Homes were abandoned. Crime was sky high. And, worst of all, the reins of city government were being pulled by Congress — instead of by citizens in charge of their own destiny. But we rose up. We harnessed the energy of many. We abandoned old ideas and ushered in new ones. We put our house back in order. We sent the control board packing, two years ahead of schedule. Agencies emerged from receivership. We balanced eight budgets in a row. We now have a large surplus, and a $300 million rainy day fund to protect citizens if the economy turns sour. We repaired our relationship with the federal government. We returned our rightful elected leaders to the Wilson Building. City services rose from the basement to the top floor. We launched the Mayor’s Call Center, which has responded to more than 1 million service requests. We went from junk bond status to an “A” bond rating. We created thousands of new homeowners. We boosted our number of police to 3,900, trained them better and reduced violent crime by 34 percent. We created the best municipal Web site in the country. Together, we lifted up a city that had fallen into disrepair. Together, we spread economic development across all eight wards. Together, we created a government that actually responds to citizen requests. And together, we built a financial house with a firm foundation. A few weeks ago, our city was among the first to step forward and reach out to the people of New Orleans —offering food, shelter, health care, job assistance, education, and most of all, compassion. Seven years ago, such a mobilization was impossible. As your Mayor, I have led this city to the threshold of greatness. We have opened the door, and prepared this city to walk through it. But I have come to tell you today that I will not be the one to lead you through that door. I am announcing that I will not seek re-election to a third term as mayor of the District of Columbia. Although I’ve been your mayor for two terms, my service to the District began in 1995, when I was appointed CFO. At the end of my current term, I will have devoted the last 11 years of my life to making this city a better place. It’s the toughest challenge I’ve ever had — but it’s also the one I’ve loved the most. My biggest reason for not serving a third term is the feeling that it’s time for a change. Time for me to begin a new chapter in my life and to look for new challenges. People say: “Why now?” I felt strongly that it was unfair to the people of this city to begin the political process so early. But I also don’t want my future plans to cloud the landscape of our great city. I want to allow the candidates to make their case to the people as to why they should be elected. I hope that the candidates offer specifics – I hope they put forward concrete ideas about what they would do if they were Mayor. People should listen closely. I know I will. As I look around the city, I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. New retail opportunities for our residents — places like Home Depot, Gallery Place, Best Buy, Container Store, new Giant food stores in Brentwood and Columbia Heights, a Storehouse furniture in Ward 1, and a revitalized neighborhood in Barracks Row. We opened the new convention center and we’re redeveloping the site of the old one. On the horizon, we have the Southeast Federal Center, a Costco in Fort Lincoln, a new grocery store in Ward 8, a Target in Columbia Heights, two Harris Teeter grocery stores, a new National Portrait Gallery and the Newseum in Penn Quarter. This year alone, we’ve opened new affordable housing at Henson Ridge in Ward 8, Capitol Gateway in Northeast, and the Fairmont Apartments in Ward 1. We’ve got our waterfront plan that begins the Anacostia River’s renewal and rebirth. It’s my belief that the Anacostia River will be one of the great urban rivers in our country and a symbol of our city’s renewal. Adding to that renewal is baseball. I fought hard and succeeded in bringing a baseball team back to our city after a 34 year absence. Today, the Washington Nationals have surpassed expectations, and baseball is thriving in the District of Columbia. In a few years, a new ballpark will rise on the shores of the Anacostia. The ballpark will be an economic engine — creating jobs, and luring fans from near and far. But the ballpark is just one piece in a mosaic of a revitalized Anacostia waterfront. One day this waterfront will be the most beautiful riverfront in the country. There’s never been a day when I’ve been Mayor alone. From my staff to my agency directors to my deputy mayors, I will leave office confident that I appointed people who left this city better than they found it. I’m grateful to my friends, supporters, staff and — yes— even my detractors, for helping me bring about the transformation of our magnificent city. We have 15 months — yes, 15 months — left on this road. There’s still more work to be done. Just yesterday, I shared with you a list of 10 priorities for the coming months. My “New Communities” and “Way to Work” initiatives will do more to rebuild some of our poorest neighborhoods, and provide jobs for people who live there. The incredible suffering we’ve seen unfold throughout the Gulf Coast is a vivid reminder of continued inequity among races and incomes in our country. My vision for our city is a healthy “stew” of white, black, brown — of all backgrounds and income levels, living side-by-side. I firmly believe that prosperity in our city can benefit and will benefit all residents. In a few months we’re breaking ground on a new ballpark that will anchor and reinvigorate a corner of our city that today is unknown to most residents. We need a new library system — starting with a new central library that is an inviting and safe place that’s an inspiration for people who want to learn. Our schools, our universities, and our libraries are the backbone of instruction and teaching. We must build them up if we want our children to succeed. Over the next year, I want our city to take more steps towards bridging the “digital divide.” Together, we’re going to make it easier for people of any background to harness the incredible potential of the Internet. My priorities also include building a new hospital so residents in Wards 6, 7 and 8 don’t have to travel to Northwest for medical care. I want the Council to approve my crime bill, which would target prostitution, domestic violence and gangs. In January 2007, when my term is up, I want to leave this city even better than it is today. Thank you, and God bless you. Mayor Anthony A. Williams
  12. And we’ve just seen the 2005 Molotov Cocktail deluxe. Masquerading as a low key fundraising website, Wikifund.org puts some serious fiscal firepower in the hands of us average folk. And we’ve just seen the 2005 Molotov Cocktail deluxe. Masquerading as a low key fundraising website, Wikifund.org puts some serious fiscal firepower in the hands of us average folk. The first thing you notice when browsing the site is the number of zeroes. There are some big projects being funded, some of which could affect the course of entire countries. For example, the Open Voting project: Wikifund has teamed with the Open Voting Consortium (www.openvoting.org) to get a secure, verifiable, open source voting system nationally certified. The cost? A cool million in software development, testing, and certification fees. The ramifications of this project are huge. Not only would it restore confidence in our democratic system, but it would actually save taxpayers billions in equipment cost alone. Why? Aside from being completely free (BSD Licensing), the software would run on any platform, making it possible to use commonly available hardware. Not only that, but it would be practical to manufacture dedicated hardware for a fraction of the $3000 companies like Diebold are charging. Sounds pretty familiar right? Great idea, well thought out plan, reasonable price. Here’s where it gets interesting. Ben Huffman, the creator of Wikifund, believes that there is a fatal flaw in traditional fundraising, “…there is no guarantee that any one contribution will make a difference”. Even more troubling is the question in the back of everyone’s mind, “What happens if they don’t raise enough money to get the job done? Am I throwing this money out the window?”. Enter Wikifund’s secret weapon, the Assurance Contract. Simply put, an Assurance Contract means that unless you raise enough funds to accomplish the goal (in this case, slightly over a million) then no money ever changes hands, and the project is never initiated. No wasted money, no nagging doubts. It’s all or nothing. To put your mind even further at ease, Wikifund also provides full oversight and transparency. You don’t have to trust your money is being spent wisely, they’ll show you the receipts. Now, take that powerful little concept and add a highly dynamic system that actually creates competition between the projects (difficult to explain, but very cool), can handle hundreds of thousands of users, the same number of projects, and gives users the power to directly edit any project plan, and you have something worth getting excited about. Even if you don’t feel like funding a revolution, or buying a mountain, or starting your own world shaking project; pitching in a dollar to save 10 bucks in taxes is a solid investment.
  13. Who is playing Dracula? I need to know if he is sexy enough for the part.
  14. Mayor Anthony A. Williams issued the following statement regarding the situation in Washington, DC following the explosions on London public transit: “On behalf of the citizens of Washington, DC, I send heartfelt condolences to the victims of the explosions in London’s public transit system. As Americans, we understand how they are feeling at this time of terrible tragedy and uncertainty. This heinous attack on the people of London is an attack on people everywhere. I have spoken with the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, and I have communicated with my regional counterparts. The lines of communication among federal, local and regional officials are open and working. Although there is no specific intelligence indicating an attack is planned on our city, our public safety agencies are on heightened alert, and officials are coordinating with Metro Transit Police, US Capitol Police and other public safety entities in the area. We ask that citizens keep their eyes and ears open to any suspicious activity as they go about their daily lives today. Should people note anything suspicious, we ask that they call the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099. Let me emphasize that people need to go about their regular, planned activities today. If we cease our activities, we let the terrorists win in this attack on our freedom.”
  15. Here is food for the fodder. A federal judge ordered New York Times reporter Judith Miller jailed Wednesday afternoon to force her to disclose a source to whom she had promised confidentiality. Federal District Court Judge Thomas F. Hogan took the action at the prompting of Patrick Fitzgerald, the federal prosecutor who is investigating the leaking of the name of a CIA undercover operative by a high-level source in the Bush administration. Keller, the Times executive editor, responded, “It’s chilling because it’s likely to serve future cover-ups of information that happens in the recesses of government and other powerful institutions. I think that anybody who believes that the government and other powerful institutions should be closely and aggressively watched should feel a chill up their spine today.”
  16. Hi everyone. I just wanted to get your feelings of what is happenning with China's bid to purchase an important American resource. How can we let Unocal get sold to a a country that is already a major threat to our economy. What is the Bush administration's plan? They have none." Here is the latest release from Unocal. Here is the latest release from CNOOC I hope this does not send our country down the drain.
  17. I think Linda Lovelace's performance was much more amusing.
  18. Sun you are right on the mark. As of this post, the United States has spent over $175 Billion Dollars on this war on terrorism in Iraq. All I want to know is what do we get out of this war. More taxes. More Debt. All I care about is my pocket book. I want lower gas prices, so I can drive from Washington to New York for less than $100 Dollars a trip. While I pay over $2.40 for a gallon of gas the Iraqis pay only $.05 cents. Go figure????
  19. You do not seem learning disabled to me What do you do like to do to for fun?
  20. Can what you eat affect a flu virus? “You bet it can,” says Melinda Beck, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics and nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In fact, according to Dr. Beck, it’s more what you don’t eat that counts. Dr. Beck and her multidisciplinary team of colleagues are currently building upon an earlier discovery that in mice, a diet poor in the nutrient selenium causes mutations to occur in the influenza virus, making it more dangerous. Once the virus has changed, even mice whose diets are selenium-adequate are vulnerable to the more dangerous strain. “These observations suggest a new area for flu researchers, namely the interaction between host nutrition and viral genetics,” says Dr. Beck. Selenium is found in plant foods, such as Brazil nuts and whole grain cereals, as well as in some meats and seafoods. Its content in foods depends on the amount of selenium in the soil where the plants grow or animals graze. Selenium is incorporated into enzymes that have antioxidant properties. These enzymes are important in protecting cells from damage by free radicals that are produced during infection. Selenium also has toxic properties if consumed in excess, so the Institute of Medicine has established a Tolerable Upper Limit for adults of 400 micrograms per day.

  24. A federal judge refused to accept a guilty plea from a former America Online software engineer accused of stealing 92 million e-mail addresses and selling them to spammers. Judge Alvin Hellerstein of Manhattan federal court said he was not convinced Jason Smathers, 24, had actually committed a crime under new federal “can-spam” legislation that took effect earlier this year. Smathers, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., planned to enter guilty pleas to charges of conspiracy and interstate transportation of stolen property. But the judge turned him away and scheduled another hearing for January. Under a plea deal worked out with federal prosecutors, Smathers faced a potential prison term of 18 months to two years, plus fines. The judge, who said he dropped his own AOL membership because he received too much spam, said it was not clear that Smathers had deceived anyone — a requirement of the new law. Federal prosecutor David Siegal urged the judge to accept Smathers’ guilty plea, saying “billions and billions of unsolicited e-mails” had been sent to “people like Your Honor” because of Smathers’ conduct. “Everybody hates spamsters, there’s no question about that,” Hellerstein said. But he added: “I’m not prepared to go ahead, Mr. Siegal. I need to be independently satisfied that a crime has been created.”
  25. Alex you should have spent your time seeing the movie. You will never learn on by getting others to do your work for you.
