Pollution Diet Regulations for Chesapeake Bay
Luke_Wilbur replied to a topic in Chesapeake Bay Watershed
I hope this is true. But, we will have to wait in see. -
I hope the Gulf disaster will make us think more about what is happening to our Chesapeake Bay. Half of it is dead from toxic chemicals and fertilizer. I can only think how the Environmental movement began from the fire on Cuyahoga River. The EPA and NOAA were born from it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SKGIwsXuA0

General Petraeus Replaces General McChrystal in Afganistan
Luke_Wilbur replied to a topic in United States Politics
From what I read, General McChrystal reminds me of the late Great General Patton. Both men are heroic mavericks that just did not know when to shut up. I wonder though. Should we have a little more tolerance for these rare men who have mastered the art of battle and comradeship. I wonder if the media should be allowed to weigh down war effort. Then again the Freedom of Speech is what makes our Country great. General McChrystal will be missed, but the war goes on. Pundits should lay this issue to rest. There are many battles ahead. General Patraeus needs all the support he can get from us. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85zrgHPmn5A -
I know this is wishful thinking. But, this travesty should be far past Democrats vs. Republicans. I read the news. We spur with ideas. And..... No one listens to them. BP does not respond. They post information well. They even come to Congressional meetings. They hold a stiff upper lift and listen to the frustrations we all are having. BP has no vision. If I were in charge of BP right now. I would go beyond stating "We will compensate." As we are waiting the company should revise their entire mission statement. We will put the safety of our crew first. We will drill one well head without complete assurance that this catastrophe will never be repeated again. We will work on restoring the environment and economy of the region we have damaged better than it was before. Our company will be earth friendly and a profitable investment opportunity. If I was the President I would move the Executive Offices to the Gulf. BP office should be right next door. Security can be handled by the secret service and the British government. If the British don't want us to doggess a them and the consider BP a national treasure, then why not offer all their services to get this recovered. One thing please do not do... DO NOT TAX US FOR THE MISTAKE OF BP. My boy wants me to play with him. So I am gone.

What should be noted is the rate increase of government jobs over manufacturing jobs throughout the United States. The government will go broke if it loses its tax base. We cannot just be merchants either. People need to start making things that hold value. Durable goods should really be durable. They should be built to last. We need to start engineering a new model based sustainability. Software and hardware is now built to last three years. We need to construct products that will stand the test of time and environmentally degrade when we want it to. We have to start moving obstacles. Government and too big to fail businesses need to assist the community more. Not just with pamphlets and stop doing drugs commercials. Now I have tried calling Appalachian Power numerous times about processing spent coal ash into cement. I tell them each time that I want to use it as mortar for my cabin. The only assumption I take is that they either know it cannot be processed safely or they just are reluctant to try. Turning spent coal ash that is currently considered a BIO HAZARD into a useful cement product would be wonderful for our atmosphere. Ever wondered why the Roman buildings are still standing. Moist lime and volcanic ash (calcium silicate hydrate) is how they made their cement. One part ash to five parts moist lime. I am trying to use fly ash. I need to decide what I am going to use for my aggregate. Currently thinking clay and pigs hair? Then I need to consider my water to cement and aggregate ratio. I am going to contact my local USDA representative for help on this. This is what happens when you work at a farm. You have time to dream. I just need the support by the entire community. Not just with money, but with cooperative ideas and sharing of materials and lending a hand from time to time is not bad.

I think we should be thanking the Coast Guard and all the hard working volunteers who are trying their very best to protect our shores. The efforts will not be in vain.

I think it right to make sure there is no loopholes for BP not to pay. But, their funding Wildlife rescue groups gives me hope. For more information on the operations and ways to help, visit: http://www.tristatebird.org

House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-CA) announced today released documents obtained from the Coast Guard including a log of events from the immediate aftermath of the April 20 explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon shedding new information on the first days of the disaster. Click Here for Story and Timeline Compiled by the Center for Public Integrity Highlights from the logs: New Questions about Erroneous Oil Leak Estimates – On April 21 the Coast Guard evaluated the "potential environmental threat" and concluded that in addition to 700,000 gallons of diesel from the vessel there was an "estimated potential of 8000 barrels per day of crude oil, if the well were to completely blowout." This estimate, made one day after the explosion, was larger than both the initial 1000 barrels per day first estimate of oil lost and the first upward revision to 5000 barrels of oil leaking per day. Early Failed Attempts to Secure the Well – While it has been reported that the first efforts to use remote operated vehicles (ROV) to activate the well's blowout preventer occurred on April 25, Coast Guard logs indicate that efforts actually began on April 21. On April 22 logs state, "ROV attempts to shut-in the well were unsuccessful; a third attempt is being conducted." The White House and "No Apparent Leak" – The White House Oil Spill Timeline states that on April 23 there was "No Apparent Leak." Coast Guard documents, however, reveal the full context of the claim. Coast Guard logs from April 23 state: "Earlier reports that the ROV had confirmed that that the blowout preventer valve was closed was incorrect. ROV has only been able to confirm there is no visible flow from the well." Why wasn't the oil visually evident? Coast Guard logs from April 22 point to the massive fire: "The majority of the oil continues to be mitigated by the fire … use of ROV to shut-in the well has been unsuccessful after several attempts." Click here to read the Coast Guard documents and logs on the early hours of the Gulf oil spill tragedy.

I do not think you will get enough torque to turn the head. Why not just connect an octagon ring around the well head and piece it together like a three dimensional puzzle. We can use the technology we have from NASA and NOAA and BP. Robots would torque down the screws of the well head. It can be zippered up and clamped down and reinforced by adding more and more layers. We can put a goose neck made of the same lego-like pieces. Then we could coil steel lines around the well head and for finally pour concrete on top of the well head.

These two disasters are way too eerily similar. Blowout preventer(BOP) failing, thousands of gallons of oil leaking, fires burning, toxic disbursements sprayed above, miles of boom placed around slick, wildlife dying, fishing and tourism industry destroyed, all managed by the same player Transocean Sedco Forex Inc. Even the Alaska pipeline was shut down during the same period. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=P-4oooyqe_8

I commend the President's honor of stating the blame starts with him. But, I feel that the questions, ideas and opinions should be shared. These opinions should be made public for all to see. Why do we fear openness. Take command and tell us what is really going on. Don't worry about the panic. It is already here. But, hey I am alive and kicking. I am actually having a good day. I won a judgment in Court. Why not let the Department of Education, The National Archives, The Library of Congress, and the Government printing office start sending out printed newsletters to all registered voters. Gulf Oil Newsletter Why not respond to people that you send letters to and put it on CSPAN, Voice of America, NPR, and whoever what to broadcast it. All media and file types welcome. Why not have a National Customer Service Center. The National Customer Service Center can be a place where the public gets answers. At this moment the government makes it too difficult to disseminate what is going on. I am reading and watching people come up with amazing new products. But, for some reason updates are not timely. This is doing a great disservice to our Nation. We need to update USA.gov. It is a disgrace to our nation. The government should be creating its own software search engine to crawl all departments. This cloud configuration is similar to bit torrent. (Side historical note. I see too many computers being thrown out as a kid. My dad would get them donated to schools of disadvantaged students.) We need to start using the brain power of our entire nation to solve this problem. President Obama please use it. Start letting people post and start responding to questions. Hire people to research and find the answers. Let this web site be mirrored everywhere. Here is an idea. Why not use a mile long series of remote controlled sensory pressure valves to slow the flow rate of oil. The bottom valves heated by a small radioactive core to not freeze. Maybe the top tubing segments could be more flexible. Possibly create more flexible high pressure tubing like the ones that connect the engine to my radiator. The oil can be stored in a long thin tub that can be expanded like Lego bricks. Imagine a Lotus flower. Large petals would float below the surface. They can be made by forming plastic cells that could withstand hurricanes. Tankers could connect to the flower pods and suck up all the hydrocarbons and byproducts. The connecting points could be raised in a process similar to a periscope. What I have written could be Alice in Wonderland. But, I am seeing chain reactions of thoughts. Trying to focus passed the pundits and more on the good. Taking positive steps without looking back too much. But, there is so much anger and hatred going on that the message is not very clear. That cannot be good. This weekend I honored loved ones for Memorial Day. When I went home I watched Patton. George C. Scott was such a great actor. We need a romantic leader that truly loves to lead this great nation to its prime. Life is a game of continuous rules with a continual multitude of players. We need to grab ideas faster and execute them to building a perfect Nation (I personally believe under the Creator). I commend President Obama for not taking Command of the air waves. I commend Congress for not requesting to temporarily suspend our Freedom of Speech. But they have to respond better than they have. President Obama, please get the message out that we can all believe and understand.

American Politics - Football Mentality
Luke_Wilbur replied to Luke_Wilbur's topic in United States Politics
A friend of mine sent this to me. Food for thought: "Politics is the last place where we're supposed to be satisfied between Brand A and Brand B," says John Avlon, author of the engaging new book Wingnuts: How The Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America. Hyper-partisans and rhetorical extremists on the left and the right—characters such as Reps. Alan Grayson and Michele Bachmann, commentators such as Keith Olbermann and Glenn Beck—are not simply polarizing the debate, argues Avlon, who is a regular presence on CNN and a columnist for The Daily Beast. Far more importantly (and destructively), they are obscuring the fact that the U.S. electorate is, in the main, proto-libertarian. Independents are the fastest-growing group of voters, says Avlon and, "They tend to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal to libertarian." Avlon is also the author of Independent Nation: How Centrism Can Change American Politics. -
A blowout preventer (BOP) is a large device with a series of valves (also referred to as "rams") placed at the top of a well that can be closed for safety reasons during drilling. The rams are designed to close if pressure from an underground formation causes fluids such as oil or natural gas to enter the wellbore and threaten the rig. By closing the rams, undesired fluid flow can be prevented, thus allowing the opportunity to regain control of the wellbore. Once the well is closed, the situation is then evaluated to determine the procedure required to return the well to safe operating status. A BOP can be installed above ground or under water. BOPs for a deepwater well are powered and controlled remotely by means of hydraulic actuators. Today's average deep-sea BOP can control 15,000 pounds per square inch (psi) in water up to 10,000 feet deep. There are three basic types of valves used in deepwater BOPs: One valve is a "ram" that makes a seal on pipe of a specific diameter by making a sharp horizontal motion. Another type makes seals on pipes of various diameters. A third type of BOP valve seals the wellbore itself. The Horizon Deepwater BOP contains elements of all three types of valve. Go to the BP web site for more information http://www.bp.com

The primary objective of the top kill process is to put heavy kill mud into the well so that it reduces the pressure and then the flow from the well. Once the kill mud is in the well and it's shut down, then we follow up with cement to plug the leak. For the top kill procedure we are designing equipment to pump the highest kill rate we can, irrespective of the flow rate of oil from the well, to force a downward flow of mud into the well. This, combined with the heavy drilling fluid is designed to eventually stop the flow. This has never been attempted at these depths. This is very complex – and involves several complex procedures coming together.
Detailed description of the procedure
We have the Q4000 vessel at the surface which has a crane for lifting heavy equipment and is a central part of the surface equipment for this procedure. We also have a number of other vessels: the HOS Centerline, with Halliburton pumping equipment; the HOS Strongline; and the BJ Services Blue Dolphin and Halliburton Stim Star IV pumping boats. A total of 50,000 barrels of mud will be on location to kill the well – far more than necessary, but we want to be prepared for anything. Pumping capacity on location is more than 30,000 hydraulic horsepower. The mud will be pumped down the 6-5/8 inch drill pipe (pipe is connected to the Q4000), then through 3-inch hoses, which go through the manifold on the seafloor. Then the mud moves through another set of 3-inch hoses attached to the Deepwater Horizon BOP choke and kill lines. With the manifold, we can also pump the 'junk shot' if necessary to stop too much of the kill mud going out through the top of the BOP rather than going down into the well to stop the flow. By switching valves in the subsea manifold, we can inject the 'bridging material' (the junk), which will prevent such losses and enable the top kill to continue. We've been testing the junk shot on-shore, looking at different configurations of what might restrict the flow out of the Deepwater Horizon riser and what types of materials would help shut it off. Materials in a junk shot can include well-known items such as pieces of tires, golf balls, and pieces of rope. Most of the equipment is on site and preparations continue for this operation. Click on the thumbnail to see a diagram picture of the "top kill" procedure.

Recently, I have been looking for die cast toy manufacturers in the United States. What I found out is that there are none. Just like glass Christmas balls, die cast toys are now made in China. One person I spoke to said that this industry has been gone over ten years. The technology has not really advanced that much, except they now use hair dryers to speed up the decal drying process. The Chinese workers are quite amazing. Their work is meticulous and fast. The owners of the die cast companies said there are no American workers willing to put on decals anymore and everyone wants a white collar desk job. These owners in China stated that everything is not a bed of roses. While the workers are good, the Chinese government can be harsh. One company owner told me that he had been pushed out of his factory near Hong Kong and was moved further out to the countryside. I was shocked to find out the reason. China is now getting into the weapons business. His factory was being converted to making automatic rifles and smart weapons. I know the United States makes weapons also. You can see a string of weapons dealers down on the border of Mexico selling them to anyone with cash. But, what is happening in China scares me. Without the help of China, the United States does not have the rare earth metals to make smart weapons. When a government kicks out your business, so it can better use its resources that is way more scary. The owners of these companies are becoming even more reliant on their China counterparts to do the engineering to make the products as well. Once we lose the engineering America will lose the economic competitiveness. I see our government is completely focused on Clean Energy technology. They say it is our only hope for energy independence, job growth, and to save the environment. As everyone knows on these message boards I am all for Clean Energy technology. But, I am also for American manufacturing. I now realize the SBA.gov is not helping American manufactures or small business merchants that are not in step with the Green initiative. I am willing to bet that more toys are sold in the United States than windmills and solar panels combined. What I need to see is the dollar comparison. I think of what is happening with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico right now. Over a million barrels of crude oil and natural gas are bubbling up to the surface every day, causing a huge environmental disaster. Why? We have a foreign company lease the well, we have a foreign country manage the well, we have the rig made in a foreign country. And a few American workers maintain it. There is the poster child for everything wrong with the system. I imagine billions of dollars being wasted everyday. I can see the same disaster at Walmart. You have all hard goods manufactured by foreign countries. And American workers moving the goods. You hear horror stories of lead poisoning children, wall boards causing lung infections, contaminated food.... I do not blame the developing countries. They cannot be expected to make the goods with the pride our workers had. They are poor and do not get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Our worker force had the American Dream. I can see the same disaster with our financial industry. I went to banks around me asking if they are ready to start lending again. If you do not have government contract you might as well not bother. They don't even put business loan pamphlets on the shelf anymore. It is better to borrow from the Federal Reserve and buy U.S. treasuries, than risk money on Small businesses. The sad thing is the U.S. Treasury is giving money to the Fed. Which means that banks make money, but the value of it becomes less. Unless they lend it to foreign countries. What makes matters worse is some of the banks are now controlled by foreign governments. I can see the same disaster with our military. The country is so out of touch with what is going on abroad. There is no draft. There are no increase of taxes. We gain no money from the countries we are protecting. Most people do not even understand how much money we are borrowing money everyday to fight. So I am asking America's elite to start thinking about the United States again. The return is not as good, but it is consistent. I am asking America's elite to start thinking about the economic ecosystem around them. Take a drive down Main Street and look at all the stores and factories closed around them. Is this investment you make today not only good for you, is it good for our country.

Be among the middle or high schools selected to have students help capture and archive today's primary source materials on the Web. There is a growing awareness among libraries, archives, and other cultural institutions of the importance and urgency of preserving the often transitory digital cultural artifacts distributed over the Web. But so far, most decisions about what Web sites will live into the future have been made by adults, and reflect adults' sensibilities about which records are historically significant. In order to broaden this perspective, the Internet Archive and the Library of Congress launched the K-12 Web Archiving Program. The K-12 Web Archiving Program has two primary objectives: 1. Archive the Web from the perspective of students to ensure that at risk digital content that is important to them is captured and preserved forever. 2. Stimulate students to think about history and actively participate in selecting the primary sources of today for historical research tomorrow. The program explores archiving the Web from students' perspectives. Participants use the Archive-It service from the Internet Archive to create "time capsules" of born digital content available via the Web chosen by students to represent their world. Visit http://archive-it.org/k12/ to see comments and collections from previous participants. By allowing students to identify sites that will be preserved, the program gives K-12 students a chance to document their cultural history and the world that's important to them. Unlike time capsules of tangible objects, which usually remain hidden for decades or centuries, the resulting Web collections will be immediately visible and publicly accessible, with full text search for study and analysis. Stimulating young people to think about history in the context of their own lives will enrich their study of history, provide an opportunity to actively engage in selecting the matter of history in the future, and help students begin to grasp the tremendous challenges presented by a world in which information can be both generated and removed with a key stroke. To learn more about Archive-It, please visit our home page athttp://www.archive-it.org/or contactus. One more thing... Betty Nguyen spoke with British Petroleum C.E.O. Tony Hayward about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill clean-up efforts. Mr. Hayward stated that it is BP's responsibility to fix the problem and restitution for businesses that legitimate claims.
