Democrats Put Nuclear Detection On The Back Burner
Luke_Wilbur replied to a topic in United States Politics
This 4th of July my wife and I ended up in Missoula, Montana. By random chance I ended up meeting former Sen. George McGovern at the Independence Day celebration at Southgate Mall. The Boy Scouts gave out 3-D glasses to watch the fireworks. The glasses really made the 30 minute firework display a memorable one. -
How far in advance do you have to book? How long/$$$ are your shows?

Democrats Put Nuclear Detection On The Back Burner
Luke_Wilbur replied to a topic in United States Politics
I agree with you one hundred percent. I live here in the District and hope they do set up some detection system. There were intitial rumors that a radiation detection grid was being placed around Washington. At the moment I only have seen Bio/Chemical Agent Detection Systems around major points of interest. Every major event I worry that a terrorist attack can happen. This upcoming Fourth of July the Washington Nationals playing at RFK and several hundred thousand people will be having fun on the National Mall. What a security nightmare. I have heard that the government is implementing a radiation detection system at major shipping ports around the country. I think this is a good first step. Currently, cargo ship containers you can be rented by anyone. Due to the amount of containers that come into our ports every day customs only randomly checks what is in them. A friend of mine told me that after customs checks you the first time, very rarely do they check your future shipments. How scary is that???? -
What about jobs for Mexicans. In my opinion Mexico really needs to build an economy that raises the standard income level for its people to survive in a global economy.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved Virginia’s wellhead protection program, which supports community projects to protect underground drinking water sources. “Virginia’s wellhead protection program reflects Virginia’s commitment to help protect critical underground sources of drinking water for 1.6 million customers. Wellhead protection is another important way that citizens can actively participate in protecting their own environment,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region. “Wellhead protection at the local level is an important part of ensuring the quality of Virginia’s water supply,” said Robert G. Burnley director of Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. “DEQ and our partners at the Virginia Department of Health will continue to support local wellhead protection efforts through a program of technical assistance and funding opportunities.” Virginia’s wellhead protection program focuses on developing safeguards to prevent contaminants from entering water supply wells. Wellheads are the locations where the water enters the well. The wellhead protection area is a wide, often irregularly shaped area surrounding the well that needs to be protected from potential contaminants including leaking underground storage tanks, pesticides leaching into the soil, and faulty septic systems that release harmful bacteria. Community wellhead protection programs may include identifying sensitive wellhead areas that need protection, identifying potential sources of contaminants, and managing the protected area. The federal Safe Drinking Water Act requires all states to develop a wellhead protection plan. With an approved plan, Virginia is eligible to receive federal grants that communities can use for wellhead protection. During 2005, EPA is providing the Virginia DEQ and the Virginia Department of Health with $165,000 for wellhead protection at the local level. Local and state governments, and water suppliers promote wellhead protection through public education, health regulations, monitoring surveys, zoning ordinances, land acquisition, and other types of local planning. More information on EPA wellhead protection program can be found at http://www.epa.gov/OGWDW/whpnp.html Virginia communities interested in launching a wellhead protection program can call Virginia DEQ’s Water Resources Division at 804-698-4042 or visit their website at http://www.deq.virginia.gov/gwpsc/whp.htm .

High temperatures are here, but that doesn't have to mean high energy bills. EPA's Energy Star program has advice on smart ways to keep cool with energy-efficient products and practices. The average family spends $1,500 a year on energy bills, nearly half of which goes to heating and cooling. To help protect against high energy bills, EPA encourages the following: – Look for the Energy Star label on products such as ceiling fans, programmable thermostats, and room air conditioners. & Schedule an annual checkup for your central air conditioner with a licensed contractor, and check or replace its air filter once a month. & Replace an old or broken-down central air conditioner or heat pump with new, high efficiency equipment. Homeowners save as much as 20 percent on energy costs if new equipment is properly installed with properly installed and sealed ducts. & Seal up gaps and cracks in the basement, attic, around doors and windows. Add insulation if needed. This will help reduce energy bills throughout the winter, too. & Get informed. For additional ways to make your home more energy efficient, see EPA's Guide to Energy-Efficient Heating and Cooling on the Energy Star web site or call 1-888-STAR-YES for a free copy. If half of all American homes were cooled with energy saving Energy Star products, the change would prevent nearly 70 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the emissions of nearly 6 million cars. EPA is working together with Energy Star partner manufacturers, national retailers, and energy efficiency organizations to make it easier to find cooling products that have earned the Energy Star. Energy Star was started by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary partnership to reduce air pollution through increased energy efficiency. Today, in partnership with the Department of Energy, the program offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect our environment for future generations. More than 7,000 organizations have become Energy Star partners and are committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes and businesses. For more information on helping the environment and energy-efficient cooling, visit http://www.energystar.gov/cooling.

Newshounds.us reported that Kevin Zeese said that we need an inquiry in order to find out more. He thinks there is enough evidence at this point for a resolution of inquiry, a prelude to impeachment. He said only one congressperson is needed to make the resolution. He also said that we are starting to see Republicans like Walter Jones, from North Carolina, who coined the term "freedom fries" in the capital cafeteria, now saying Bush misled us into war. See photo below. I contacted Congressman Walter B. Jones office about the Kevin Zeese statement. I was told the story was innacurate. Congressman Jones is NOT calling on or supporting any efforts to impeach President Bush. In fact he was on his steering committee last election and supports the President. The Congressman's primary concerns about Iraq have to do with our men and women in uniform and their families. He represents a military district that includes Camp Lejeune, where many of the Marines were stationed before Iraq. Because of that military connection, he has been seeing the families of those who have lost a loved one up close and personal. He has signed over 1,200 letters to the families of those who have lost a loved one in Iraq or Afghanistan, and as more letters pile up he cannot help but hope for an end to the losses. Despite some of the freedom fries, political talk that's out there, Congressman Jones statements stems from his concern for our men and women in uniform. Like many others, the intelligence failure on WMD is a great concern for him. Again, he does not blame the President for his decision on the war, because he made a judgment call based upon the same faulty intel that he himself used in deciding how to cast his vote.

The EDA is an Agency of the European Union. High Representative Solana is Head of the Agency, chairman of the Steering Board, which acts under the Council's authority and within the framework of guidelines issued by the Council. The European Defence Agency (EDA) was established by the Council on 12 July 2004. It is designed "to support the Member States in their effort to improve European defence capabilities in the field of crisis management and to sustain the ESDP as it stands now and develops in the future". More specifically, the Agency is ascribed four functions, relating to: a. defence capabilities development; b. armaments cooperation; c. the European defence technological and industrial base and defence equipment market; d. research and technology. These functions all relate to improving Europe's defence performance, by promoting coherence in place of fragmentation.

The new Financial Framework should provide the financial means necessary to address effectively and equitably future internal and external challenges, including those resulting from disparities in the levels of development in an enlarged Union. It should, in parallel, attest to determined efforts towards budgetary discipline in all policy areas within a general context of budgetary consolidation in the Member States. Policies agreed in accordance with the Treaty should be consistent with the principles of subsidiarity, proportionality and solidarity. They should also provide added value. The new financial perspective should cover the seven years between 2007 and 2013 and be drawn up for a European Union comprising 27 Member States on the working assumption that Bulgaria and Romania will join the Union in 2007. The current financial framework and Interinstitutional Agreement have largely succeeded in their objective of ensuring financial discipline, the orderly evolution of expenditure and smooth budgetary procedures. The new agreement to be established between EP, Council and Commission will have to pursue the same objectives and should allow for the degree of flexibility needed to strike a satisfactory balance between budgetary discipline and efficient resources allocation. There will be a concentration of structural and cohesion fund assistance on the least developed regions and Member States while providing for satisfactory transitional arrangements in particular for those contributing most to such a concentration. Actions supported by cohesion policy should be focussed on investment in a limited number of priorities organised around three Objectives: Convergence; Regional competitiveness and employment; Territorial cooperation.
