  1. This week, a delegation of Alaska youth brought a “Letter to Our Leaders on Global Warming” with 5,000 signatures from Alaska high school students to Washington, D.C. to demand action on global warming. The effort, with signatures from teens in more than 100 communities, was spearheaded by Alaska Youth for Environmental Action. Representing Alaska Native villages and urban communities, the teen delegation met with several members of Congress, including Alaska’s delegation and other House and Senate lawmakers, to highlight the dramatic impacts global warming is having on Alaska’s economy, natural resources, and cultures. The teens are calling on Congress to pass legislation that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and provides incentives for renewable energy. “We see global warming happening in Alaska, and we want our leaders to know that if they don’t do something today, my generation will pay for it tomorrow,” said Verner Wilson, a Yup’ik Alaska Native from Dillingham, who drafted the petition. “I started this petition to ask our leaders to help protect this place that Alaska youth have inherited, and to protect our lifestyles and cultures. Alaskan communities like Shishmaref are sinking, and invasive species are affecting the environment that Alaskans have depended upon for thousands of years.” Since January 2006, teens in the AYEA program have traveled the state, presenting on global warming and teaching students what they can do to reduce their carbon emissions. Community interest in the effort has been overwhelming—the teens have presented in over two hundred and fifty classrooms. Charlee Lockwood, a young woman from the village of St. Michael on the northwest coast of Alaska, is one of many Alaska Native youth concerned about the impacts of global warming on subsistence and Native culture. “Because so many youth from so many villages have signed this petition, I really feel like I am helping others. By speaking to other youth about global warming, I have given other people the courage to speak up.” “Global warming is here and now. Alaska is among the most impacted regions in the world, facing temperature increases at least four times greater than the world average according to the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment,” said Anchorage student Tim Treuer, a member of the youth delegation who has collected several hundred signatures. “Alaska’s three biggest industries--oil and gas, tourism and fishing—are already being hurt by rising temperatures,” states Justin Hurst, a graduate of Dimond High School who has worked at the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau for the past few summers. “Today, tourists have to take a boat to the Portage Glacier,” because of its dramatic recession. The teens raised funds to purchase “green tags” to offset the carbon emissions created by their flights to Washington. Fellow Alaskan teens also presented the petition to leaders in Juneau and Anchorage this week, requesting local initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) is a high school leadership program of the National Wildlife Federation, founded by six teenagers in 1998. 6. After three years of relentless work by DC Vote, a mark-up is scheduled in the House Government Reform Committee for a piece of legislation that would give DC residents a voting representative in the House for the first time ever. The new legislation is the DC Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act of 2006, which was announced by Representative Tom Davis (R-VA) and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). DC Vote has worked closely with Davis, Norton, and other members of Congress to address concerns about the original DC voting rights legislation (H.R. 2043) and build a consensus for the new bill. "We are on the brink of a major voting rights victory," said DC Vote Executive Director Ilir Zherka. "DC Vote has dedicated long hours and tireless efforts to see movement on a voting rights bill, and today we celebrate with our coalition partners as we take one step closer to bringing democracy to America's capital." DC Vote urges a swift mark-up in committee and action by Congress. Americans must raise their voices to help encourage Congress to bring this important issue to the forefront. "We call on Washingtonians to rise up," said Zherka. "We are the closest we have ever been to voting representation in Congress, and DC residents should be shouting from the rooftops and engaging friends across the country to make this critical bill a law." DC Vote has organized coalition meetings, met with congressional staffers, educated the public on the importance of DC voting rights legislation, and proposed changes to improve the bill. The DC FAIR Act (H.R. 2043) would: Give the historically-Democratic District of Columbia its first voting member in the U.S. House of Representatives. Give the historically-Republican state of Utah a fourth vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. Create these two new seats in the House by temporarily raising the number of Representatives from 435 to 437. After the 2010 U.S. Census reapportionment, the number of House seats would return to 435 with DC retaining a full vote in the House. Contact your congressman today. Here is a letter you can cut and paste. This service will assist you by identifying your Congressperson in the U.S. House of Representatives and providing contact information. http://www.house.gov/writerep/

  8. Mr. Rees, What is your opinion of DC's Republican Party?
  9. I think Libraries and Schools should be top issues. Children are the future. With everything becoming so competitive we need to give our kids the best opportunity our government can buy.
  10. Mr. Rees, Please refrain from calling people names. Thanks.

  12. Who do you think is the best choice for mayor?
  13. After so many supportive emails I have decided to publically post my correspondance with Google. This is what I received so far. On Tuesday March 14, 2006 I contacted Bill Nolte, My representative from Google. Bill sent me the message below. After numerous phone calls to Bill Nolte with no response. I have been active in the Google support forums. I was advised to contact Google though their support system. This is the automated response I have received.
  14. The letter to US President George Bush carries the Iranian nation's views and comments on international issues as well as suggestions for resolving the many problems facing humanity, said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here Tuesday. Speaking to reporters at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport before his departure for Indonesia to attend a meeting of the D-8 (Group of 8 developing Muslim states), the president said that Islamic courtesy prevented him from revealing its contents. "We will wait to see what would be the reaction of the other side and then we will make the decision," Ahmadinejad said. "Fortunately, we have no problem when it comes to making decisions," Ahamdinejad added. The Iranian president on Monday sent a letter to President Bush, but would not reveal its contents. Later in the day, government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said at a news conference in Tehran that President Ahmadinejad, in his letter, talked of international developments and crises, analyzed the global situation and offered new ways to resolve international disputes. The letter was submitted to President Bush via the Swiss embassy in Tehran which takes charge of the US' interests section in Iran. Below is a full text letter of Islamic Republic Of Iran President to President Bush. I have highlighted some key points of the text. There is a religious tone to the message. President Mahmoud repeats how the administration is going against the teachings of Mohammad, Christ, and Moses. President Mahmoud then paints a picture of a coming apocalypse if the course of events do not change. Behind the rhetoric is the true intention of the letter. Let Iran have its nuclear program and let all people living in Isreal have a vote on the future of the country.
  15. Nelson Jacobsen is a good man. He has been a positive force in our online community. Let's talk about what the hell is going on with the stadium. I personally want to know timeline of completion. I have been hearing gunshots on several occassions at night in zip code 20002. Except for the Library of Congress, Smithsonian, and other non profits there is no decent Libraries in my neighborhood. The DC Veterans memorial on the National Mall is dirty and falling apart. Is Linda Crop going to be our mayor? Lets stop doggessin and start acting like we care about the District.
  16. I do not know. His phone went out before I could ask him too many questions. Here is a photo a Arghandab river valley Rob sent us.
  17. DCpages just got a call from one of our family members. Robbie B currently located in Aktar Village, Afghanistan. Rob says that he misses Washington DC. But and the local villagers are nice and support a free Afghanistan. His unit recovered and destroyed rebel weapons caches. The Aktar village is located near the Arghandab river. Arghandab is a river of Afghanistan, about 250 mi. in length. It rises in the Hazara country north-west of Ghazni, and flowing south-west falls into the Helmund 20 mi. below Girishk. Very little is known about its upper course. In its lower course it is much used for irrigation, and the valley is cultivated and populous; yet the water is said to be somewhat brackish. It is doubtful whether the ancient Arachotus is to be identified with the Arghandab or with its chief confluent the Tarnak, which joins it on the left out 30 mi. S. W. of Kandahar. The two rivers run nearly parallel, inclosing the backbone of the Ghilzai plateau. The Tarnak is much the shorter (length about 200 mi.) and less copious. The ruins at Ulan Robat, supposed to represent the city Arachosia, are in its basin; and the lake known as Ab-i-Istada, the most probable representative of Lake Arachotus, is near the head of the Tarnak, though not communicating with it. The Tarnak is dammed for irrigation at intervals, and in the hot season almost exhausted.

  20. Many Americans, including President Bush and conservative local talk radio hosts, voiced their opinion Friday that the national anthem should be English-only. What is your opinion of the song? Here are the lyrics: By the light of the dawn, do you see arising, what we proudly hailed at twilight’s last fall? Its stars, its stripes yesterday streamed above fierce combat a gleaming emblem of victory and the struggle toward liberty. Throughout the night, they proclaimed: “We will defend it!” Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave above the land of the free, the sacred flag? Its stars, its stripes, liberty, we are the same. We are brothers in our anthem. In fierce combat, a gleaming emblem of victory and the struggle toward liberty. My people fight on. The time has come to break the chains. Throughout the night they proclaimed, “We will defend it!” Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave above the land of the free, the sacred flag? You can listen to the song here http://buffalopundit.wnymedia.net/wp-conte...0428%202235.mp3
  21. News is quite busy today as Congress prepares to debate Immigration Reform. I think this strike will be a good guage to see how Americans are dependant on immigrant labor. We saw what happened when the port labor unions striked. We saw what happened when the NY transit labor unions striked. The following is a statement issued today by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, (AFSCME) AFL-CIO, President Gerald W. McEntee. The White House also had a statement on the issue. The President calls on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform to secure our border, improve enforcement of our laws, meet the needs of our economy, and uphold our highest values. The President also discussed his proposal for a temporary worker program that rejects amnesty, allows foreign workers to fill jobs that Americans are not willing to do, and reduces illegal immigration, smuggling, and crime at the border. The President has called on Congress to increase the number of green cards that can lead to citizenship, and he supports increasing the number of visas available for foreign-born workers in highly skilled fields. New citizens have an obligation to learn the customs and values that define our Nation - including liberty and equality for all, respect for the beliefs of others, justice under the law, and the English language. Since President Bush took office, funding for border security has increased by 66 percent. The Border Patrol has been expanded to more than 12,000 agents, an increase of more than 2,700 agents, or nearly 30 percent. The President's FY07 budget funds another 1,500 new agents. Agents are being provided with cutting-edge technology like infrared cameras, advanced motion sensors, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Protective infrastructure, such as vehicle barriers and fencing in urban areas, is being installed. Manpower, technology, and infrastructure are being integrated in more coordinated ways than ever before. Several U.S. Catholic Cardinals and Bishops urged humane and compassionate immigration legislation as the Senate prepared to debate immigration reform. The U.S. bishops want a "comprehensive reform" that deals compassionately with the millions of undocumented aliens in the United States, Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington said in brief remarks at a photo opportunity between meetings on Capitol Hill. The U.S. bishops have expressed support for many aspects of a compromise bill expected to reach the Senate floor in early May, but they are also concerned about harsh enforcement provisions in the legislation, including expedited removal of illegal aliens along the border and denial of protections to asylum seekers. Cardinal McCarrick and Cardinals Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles and William H. Keeler of Baltimore started the day with a breakfast meeting on immigration reform with White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove and other White House aides. Also attending that session was Vincentian Father David M. O'Connell, president of The Catholic University of America. From the White House Cardinals Mahony and McCarrick went to Capitol Hill to meet with several senators on immigration reform legislation. Following a meeting with Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley of Boston joined them and the three prelates met with Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill. A meeting with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., capped off the cardinals' Hill visit. At a brief press conference following the meeting with Reid, Cardinal Mahony was asked his views on the proposed immigrant boycott of work and school on May 1, when demonstrations for humane immigration legislation were planned across the country. Activists working on behalf of immigrants were divided over the use of a work-school boycott as a demonstration tactic. The cardinal said he hoped Los Angeles children would attend school that day to learn about immigration issues and write their legislators, and after school join a march planned in Los Angeles, which was to start at 4 p.m. in MacArthur Park. During another brief media event before the cardinals' final meeting on the Hill, Frist said he hoped the Senate would be able to craft an immigration bill that would enjoy strong bipartisan support. One of the key elements in immigration reform that the cardinals and the U.S. bishops have been working for is a program that would provide a path to citizenship for large numbers of undocumented workers already living in the United States. The compromise bill the Senate will consider allows undocumented workers who have resided in the United States for more than five years to obtain a conditional immigrant visa and eventually permanent residency after fulfilling certain conditions; it sets more stringent rules and conditions for those who have been in the United States less than five years. The cardinals were in Washington for the April 28 American Cardinals Dinner, an annual fund-raising event for The Catholic University of America. American Civil Liberties Union and the AFL-CIO will hold a joint briefing to discuss concerns with the current immigration legislation this Thursday at 2 p.m. at the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. Both organizations agree that immigration reform must reflect American values and must not violate workers' privacy through an intrusive, bureaucratic national ID requirement. The ACLU and AFL-CIO believe that immigration reform should build a path towards citizenship and not create new obstacles. America has, and must remain, a country that celebrates and welcomes those it draws into its borders. Speakers will discuss the proposed Employment Eligibility Verification System, its lack of privacy protections, and its potential negative impact on all American workers. The program would require - for the first time -all workers to obtain a federal agency's permission to work. All employers would be required to participate in a national employment eligibility verification program and the impact on all Americans' privacy and wallets could be significant. Conservative estimates place the cost of the system to be at least $11.7 billion a year.
  22. NetApplications.com, a firm specializing in tracking Internet audiences and browser usage at small to midsized enterprises, reports Firefox broke the 10% barrier in browser market share last month. Firefox grabbed a 10.05% share for March, up from 9.75% the month before. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer had 84.7%, and Apple’s Safari came in third behind Firefox with 3.19%. Over the past year, IE’s market share has dropped 3.89% as consumers wait for the release of IE7, which will have new features and enhanced security. Firefox’s market share has increased 3.34%, coinciding with its Version 1.5 introduction, boasting new features.
  23. Viswanathan had stated a week ago that though literature was her passion, she wanted to "dabble in the financial world." Getting an MBA degree would be a natural goal for her, she said. Would she be interested in studying at the famed Harvard Business School? "If they can have me, surely," she said with a chuckle. She isn't around to tell us if she is still hoping for a Harvard admission. Here is more from the Harvard Independant ********************************************************** When Random House executive Steve Ross flatly rejected the apologies offered by Kaavya Viswanathan '08 and Little, Brown, her publisher, for the similarities between Viswanathan's novel How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life and two novels by Megan McCafferty, it was clear that the publishing-industry giant was not willing to let the controversy blow over just yet. It even fanned the flames by upping the documented number of allegedly filched passages from the Crimson's thirteen to 45 (PDF), though some of the new examples seem less forceful than the evidence previously available. http://www.harvardindependent.com/ViewArti...?ArticleID=9941
  24. The price of standard crude oil on NYMEX was under $25/barrel in September 2003. By August 11, 2005, the price had been above $60/barrel for over a week and a half. A record price of $75.35 per barrel was reached, due in part to Iran's nuclear crisis, on April 21, 2006.[2] While oil prices are considerably higher than a year ago, they are still roughly $14 from exceeding the inflation-adjusted "peak of the 1980 shock, when prices were over $90 a barrel in today’s prices" The U.S. economy currently accounts for one-quarter of all demand. New demand is also coming from emerging industry in third world nations, including India and especially China which is developing a western-style car culture and whose manufacturing bases have grown very rapidly in recent years. Gas is a commodity. Commodity markets work on the law of supply and demand. When supply is higher than demand, sellers lower the price until the two factors equalize again. When demand is higher than supply, sellers raise the price to curb use and stretch supplies until, once again, the two factors equalize. Oil supply is largely controlled by the national oil companies of nations with significant reserves of cheap oil, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Norway and Kuwait. Many of these countries have formed a cartel known as OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Since OPEC controls a large proportion of oil output, it exerts a strong influence on the global price of oil. When OPEC decides to reduce the output quotas of its member countries, this will tend to drive up the price of oil as the supply diminishes. Similarly, OPEC can boost oil production in order to increase supplies and drive down the price. There are however limits on the actions of OPEC. If OPEC raises the price of oil too high, demand decreases and production of oil from less productive fields or unconventional sources such as tar sands becomes profitable
