Who will the show benefit?

The struggle for indigenous rights in Mexico is more than 500 years old. The most important recent manifestation in this struggle is the Zapatista uprising, which began on January 1, 1994, the same day that NAFTA went into effect. The Zapatistas raised a new level of consciousness among indigenous communities throughout Mexico with their call for autonomy and indigenous rights. The Zapatistas gave birth to the National Indigenous Congress, which has developed into an important national political space.

Today there are between 12 and 28 million indigenous in Mexico (depending on who is doing the counting and whether or not city-dwellers or other migrants are considered "indigenous"). Struggles for indigenous rights are particularly active in the southern states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero.

Canned Food Drive?

“About 12 million American families last year worried that they couldn't afford to buy food, and 32% of them actually experienced someone going hungry at one time or another.” The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest public, non-profit food and nutrition education resource in the Metro Area. Through networks of more than 750 member feeding programs, each year they distribute millions of pounds of food to the community and educate thousands of local residents on hunger, poverty and nutrition issues. Any donation, be it one can or 10 is greatly appreciated by the many families who are in obvious need. This year the poverty rate rose once again and we cannot idly stand by.

Acceptable contributions: Peanut Butter, Canned Fruits/Vegetables, Canned Soup, Dry Pasta
