Ward 5 Councilmember Harry “Tommy” Thomas, Jr. will participate in the presentation of a Council resolution celebrating the induction of the Negro Sandlot Washington Black Sox into Negro League Legends Hall of Fame (NLLHOF). The resolution will be presented on the steps of the Wilson Building at 2 pm on Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

The inductees, who played during the 1940s and 1950s are: Wilbur Donaldson, Walter “Rock” Greene, Roland “Tiny” Grimes, Ben Jones, Jr., Leroy “Shot Gun” Sandifer, and Albert Weems. Doffey Jones, Black Sox founder and manager, will be honored posthumously. The Negro League Legends Hall of Fame will also unveil its new tour luxury motor coach featuring a pictorial salute and the NLLHOF DVD “They Played Baseball” DVD.

The celebration will culminate on the evening of October 1 with a 6 pm reception and tour of the exhibition “Separate and Unequal: Black Baseball in the District of Columbia” at the Historical Society.

“I am pleased and proud to honor these African-American baseball legends,” said Councilmember Thomas. “They persevered against the odds, and formed their own league when denied the right to play in the Majors. Their achievement, despite the adversity of their time, is an example we can all take to heart and follow.”
