Posted July 19, 2007 Report Share Posted July 19, 2007 Last Tuesday the DC Council enacted a resolution to SELL three pieces of public property — including the West End Branch Public Library — to developer Anthony Lanier of Eastbanc and others. In so doing, Council abused its power — designating an emergency without real cause — in order to avoid the requirement for public notice and citizen input. Despite clear public dissent, Eastbanc continues to show the firehouse/library/affordable housing sandwich as an viable option for the West End neighborhood. By using a complicit City Council, Eastbanc is seeking a way for the District government to consolidate public services and turn public space into private profit. We must demand better. Petition signatories demand the City Council retract the "emergency legislation" granting West End property rights to Eastbanc.
