This evening I received a disturbing and sexually abusive email from "Stewart20008." This email, coming soon after the post in which "Studly" threatened to "shatter" my jaw is too much -- I'm saying goodbye. Perhaps somebody else will take on the job of exposing Jonathan Rees' false identities, lies and contradictions.

There are some interesting mistakes on Jonathan Rees' website -- another indication that he's something other than a real candidate for City Council for Ward 3. First, as I mentioned in another post, the source code behind his page revealed that Jonathan Rees, not Margaret Clay, who's given credit for creating the site, was the actual author of the website. After I pointed this out, the website's authorship was changed. (But I still have the original source code for anyone who wants it.) Second, Rees' post office box in zip code 20009 is not located in Ward 3, but on 18th Street, NW. Odd, isn't it? Third, what really happened to the page on Rees' website that said, "I am married to the former Mindy Lynn Silverman (actress) and I have two children; daughter Anita 30 and son Jason 25"? I still haven't seen an explanation by Rees himself about why he wrote on his own website that he has two children, but has reported elsewhere that he has three children. This is far from a petty question. It goes to the heart of the issue: Jonathan Rees is living a fantasy when it comes to running for City Council. But I do understand Mr. Rees' reluctance to be specific about who he really is. The last time he was specific was one of those "gotcha" moments: Rees wrote that he was going to be seated next to Mayor Williams at a black tie affair sponsored by the Washington Times (http://www.dcpages.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6203), when in fact Tony Williams was at a historic preservation reception at the Kennedy-Warren. Oops!

No, I'm not Sam Brooks or any other candidate for office. As I have mentioned before, because somebody on this forum threatened to "shatter" my jaw (http://www.dcpages.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6165&st=0entry10654) I wish to keep my identity secret. Who I am isn't the issue, anyway. What's important are the facts presented, in particular the quotations, contradictions and falsehoods that Jonathan Rees has presented on DC Pages and elsewhere. Rees claims to be a real candidate, but much of what he's written is just plain weird. It doesn't get much stranger than this statement Rees made on the Tenleytown Listserv: "While I am not a smoker, I see anti-smokers and their current cause in DC as being on the same mental wave length as abortion clinic bombers." Although I guess that one could say that writing that you have two children in one place (on his website) and three children in another (on DC Pages) is stranger.

Luke, I'm not here to support any particular candidate for Ward 3 City Council. I'm posting here because what I was reading on various neighborhood email lists was bothering me: Namely what appeared to fraudulent identities supporting Jonathan Rees. That's how Mr. Rees first caught my attention. I don't like it when a candidate for office makes up his supporters. Many of these people appear not to exist; others appear to be stolen identities of actual individuals. Some of the names of fabricated identities are: Harry Firestone Alex Biddy Angela Biddy Nicole Dixon Although I have no proof --yet-- I believe that Rees has also impersonated Sam Brooks, posting vile messages purporting to come from Mr. Brooks. (This wouldn't be out of character for Jonathan Rees, since he sent every judge on the DC Superior Court a gross, disturbing email -- and for this there's a Court record. And yes, it's the same Jonathan Rees.) Eventually it will all come out and Rees' house of cards will collapse. In the meanwhile, I think it's important that people who live in Ward 3 take a very, very close look at Jonathan Rees -- his statements, his history, and his actions on the Internet.

I thought that it would be helpful to see some things that Jonathan Rees has said: Rees in his own words. Draw whatever conclusions you want from this. Mr. Rees, There have been a number of accusations claiming that you have invented aliases and posted messages on DC Pages and other listservs under those false identities. There's now some additional proof of that. On your website you claim that the website, www.rees-for-citycouncil.com, was created by "Margaret Clay." But the sourcecode for your website, which anyone can see by telling their web browser to reveal source, says that you created your own website using Microsoft Word. For the record: The event that Mayor Williams was at this evening was the "Third Annual Mayor's Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation" held at the Kennedy-Warren. It goes without saying that Mr. Rees didn't get any award. There were hundreds of people at tonight's event. Maybe Mr. Rees was there, maybe not -- it was a large crowd. But Jonathan Rees wasn't with Mayor Williams during the awards presentation and wasn't "seated" next to the Mayor.

Rees' campaign is beginning to feel more like a dangerous cult. Disagree with Rees and his supporters and you're threatened with violence --you said on DCPages that you would "shatter" my jaw-- and called names like "dumb bastard," "loud mouth,"and "nut jobs." Fortunately I suspect that most people reading these forums will come to the same conclusion that I have: Jonathan Rees is not a real candidate for City Council or any other office. The words fly fast from his and his supporters' fingers, but they're just that -- words. There's nothing of substance behind this facade. It's amusing -- except for the threat of violence. That part, I have to admit, is scary, because I don't really know who is behind that threat.

Has Mr. Rees filed as a candidate for City Council? (I doubt that he's gathered the required number of signatures to file campaign papers.) If not, then none of his campaign signs are "permitted" -- they're all illegal. See District of Columbia Municipal Regulations (DCMR) Title 24. Very odd, very odd indeed.

Mr. Studly -- Threatening to "shatter" somebody's jaw is a crime. You cannot deter people from speaking out about Jonathan Rees and the Ward 3 City Council race by threatening to hurt them. As for Mr. Rees, I believe that the emperor has no clothes. He's campaign is fictional, a scam, a figment of his imagination. Anyone can create a fake campaign using the Internet and a laser printer, and that's exactly what Mr. Rees' appears to have done. Where is this supposed "event" with Mayor Williams? Why doesn't Jonathan Rees speak at a community center? Where is Mr. Rees employed? Why have other listservs banned him?

Mr. Rees -- As a so-called candidate for Ward 3 City Council, it's probably not a good idea for you to make assumptions about or attack voters in Ward 3. Just my two cents worth of advice. It's interesting that you claim not to have been banned from the various neighborhood listservs (they're not chat rooms) including Tenleytown, Cleveland Park, Palisades, Glover Park, and Chevy Chase DC. It is my belief that you and your supporters (are they real people?) have been removed from these listservs for cause. Once again: There's nothing but silence from you on these listservs. Your campaign seems to be fashioned mostly of imagination. You're marred with children? Then why is there no picture of you and your family on your website -- virtually all politicians like to show off their family. Why couldn't you remember the URL to your own website when you appeared on the Linda Chavez show? Why is it when I read about the City Council race in the Washington Post and Northwest Current there's no mention of you? How about giving a speech somewhere in Ward 3? Let voters meet you and see you in person. You seem to exist only on the Internet and on flyers.

Mr. Rees -- I heard you on Linda Chavez's radio show on WMET. Twice --not once, but twice-- you gave the wrong URL for your own website. (Don't believe me -- just listen to a tape of the show.) That's indicative of how unrealistic a candidate you are for City Council. Your website, www.rees-for-citycouncil.com, does speak volumes, though: No phone number, no physical address, odd fonts, large print. Very strange. And while you may claim that you're posting freely on moderated neighborhood email lists, anyone who visits the Tenleytown, Cleveland Park, Glover Park or Chevy Chase DC lists will see that there's nothing from you at all of recent vintage. Facts do speak louder than words.

I just posted on another (unrelated) forum, Crime Watch, because there was a thread by Rees' supporters there. I meant to post my thoughts about his campaign on one of the neighborhood forums, but I made the mistake of posting there first. (In part because the Rees campaign has been posting their messages everywhere regardless of whether the forum is appropriate.) So here I go. It's my feeling that the reason Jonathan Rees has been so active on DC Pages is that he's been banned from most, if not all, other neighborhood listserves. Spam is spam and just because Jonathan Rees claims to be running for City Council doesn't make him a real candidate. I won't speculate on exactly what he's doing, but it's certainly not an actual campaign for political office. I'm also sorry that this discussion has degerated into name calling. But I guess that's part of the way things can happen on the Internet. It's important, I think, to note that one by one, various neighborhood listservs are banning Rees and his various supporters (whom some people think are fictional).
