The Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers are a group of tremendously talented artists that grew out of the cultural experience demonstrated at Malcolm X Park and is founded by Doc Powell. Images of Life: Artist Exhibition featuring the works of Afrika Midnight Asha Abney Images of Life is an artist exhibition that is presented by Phish Tea "a journey for the senses" and will feature works created by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney. Images of Life will take place at Phish Tea located 1335 H St NE (1st Fl - Lyme Lounge) Washington, DC from July 31, 2005 - September 3, 2005. There will be an opening reception held on July 31, 2005 from 3:00-5:00pm. There will be an artist talk held on August 13, 2005 from 5:00-9:00pm. Images of Life consists of 24 pieces of artwork which includes abstract paintings and collages created on canvas and paper. It will feature several popular works including Earth, Wind and Fire, Dancing Fire #1, Dancing Fire #2, Butterfly #1, Butterfly #2, Shadow of A Man #1, Ascension/Powerful Images, La Vertus de Afrique/The creative figures of Africa, and Liberation. Images of Life will also feature several of her inspirational and visionary pieces such as Rhythmic Movement, Smokey Stones, Flower, Abstractions #1, Abstractions #2, Images of Life, Abstractions, The Mask #1, The Mask #2, The Eyes, Maze, Monumental Figures #1, Monumental Figures #2, Monumental Figures #3 and Monumental Figures #4. Afrika uses vibrant, dull and neutral colors to create works that possess fluidity and solitude. She is an abstract expressionist, who is influenced by Jorge Somarriba, Marvin Sin, Lois M. Jones, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Sam Gilliam. Sounds of Hope is a weekly collaboration of local performers, charities and Potter's House presenting an evening of food, entertainment, and community outreach. Requested donations at the door go directly to the performers and charity, and proceeds of sale of dinner and desserts benefit Potter's House. The bookservice, which carries children's books, poetry, and social justice books, in addition to extensive selections in religion and spirituality, is also open on Friday nights. Sounds of Hope is a weekly collaboration of local performers, charities and Potter's House presenting an evening of food, entertainment, and community outreach. Requested donations at the door go directly to the performers and charity, and proceeds of sale of dinner and desserts benefit Potter's House. The bookservice, which carries children's books, poetry, and social justice books, in addition to extensive selections in religion and spirituality, is also open on Friday nights. Owned by Potter's House Church, it is open from 11-3 Monday - Friday by a small and dedicated workforce of staff and volunteers. Beginning July 10th the bookservice will be open on Saturdays, and coffee and light food will be available. Potter's House has an excellent catering service, and the facility is available for rent in non-dedicated hours. Sounds of Hope was born in May 2002 in order to increase its exposure and income, and better serve the community. It takes place on Friday nights from 7-11pm.
