Smithsonian Features Oman At Folklife Festival

Recommended Posts

Visitors to this summer’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival will experience the music, dance, foods and rich craft traditions of the Sultanate of Oman—a country roughly the size of Kansas, located on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, facing the Arabian Sea. “Oman: Desert, Oasis and Sea” is the first Folklife Festival program to feature an Arab nation.

The Festival takes place on the National Mall, Thursday, June 23 through Monday, June 27 and Thursday, June 30 through Monday, July 4. Admission is free. Festival hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day, with concerts, dance parties and special events until 9 p.m.

The program will feature more than 100 musicians, dancers, craftspeople and cooks, representing the diverse cultural traditions from across the country. This diversity will be represented by a focus on Oman’s three vastly different ecologies—the desert, the oasis and the sea. Each has contributed to the cultural wealth of the nation.

I am fascinated by this somewhat obscure and rarely talked-about country and my family plans to visit the Folklife festival in June. Any tips as to what to expect?

Daryl.

You can expect to have a wonderful time at the Folklife Festival. It usually takes two days to really see everything. The festival includes: demonstrations, entertainment, ethnic food, and amazing exhibits. It is really an event the whole family will enjoy. The museums are also right next to the festival. Make sure to take metrorail, because parking will be difficult.
