Vdot To Alter Traffic Patterns On Route 1

Some relief is on the way for Virginia commuters who are frustrated with delays on Route One near the Wilson Bridge construction project.

VDOT says it's been studying traffic problems since February seventh, when the merge ramps between Route One and the Beltway were moved back.

As soon as it's practical, VDOT says more Alexandria police will be on the streets around the Wilson Bridge project to help keep traffic moving. The limit on the southbound HOV lanes on Route One will be moved back four blocks to Duke Street to give motorists more time to merge.

The ramps to the Beltway will also be accessible from two lanes of southbound Route One, rather than the current one.

Officials with the bridge project are still encouraging commuters to look for other routes and other means - such as public transit - to get to and from work
