The Redskins get off to a fast start -- scoring 46 seconds into the game -- and are tied with the Eagles, 7-7, in the first quarter at FedEx Field.

Ladell Betts returned the opening kickoff 70 yards, and the Eagles were flagged for a face mask penalty. The Redskins started from the Philadelpia 7. Two plays later, Clinton Portis scored from five yards out.

The Eagles came right back, getting a questionable pass interference on Shawn Springs to get the ball at Washington's 2. Donovan McNabb hit tight end L.J. Smith for the touchdown two plays later.

Whether it was the breakfast of champions that did the trick or a more traditional cheese steak, the Philadelphia Eagles (11-1) are in an enviable position. Unlike the NFC's other 15 teams, they have yet to fly through any turbulent winds, and with just four games left are showing no signs of regressing.

So Andy Reid, what colour are those tights you'll have to wear after Terrell Owens catches his next touchdown pass? "Chartreuse," the Philadelphia Eagles coach said.

Say what?

"No, they are black," Reid said. "Anything for the slimming effect."

If form holds, the only suspense in tonight's game between the Eagles and Washington Redskins could be whether Owens catches TD pass No. 15, the goal Reid set as a challenge for the receiver back in training camp. The reward would be that Owens would no longer have to wear shorts over his tights in practice, and that Reid would don a pair of tights, as well.

"I know at this point the tights are a given," said Owens, who has 69 catches for a league-leading 1,130 yards. "It's just a matter of when."

Washington's offense has been unable to get on a roll all season, but finally put together a strong effort last week in a 31-7 win over the New York Giants.

Clinton Portis ran 31 times for 148 yards and a touchdown, and also scored on a shovel pass from Patrick Ramsey as the Redskins scored more than 18 points in a game for the first time in 2004. They had totaled 23 points during a three-game losing streak before beating New York.

``Now we know we can do it,'' Portis said. ``It's just getting there. We couldn't get everything clicking. We couldn't have our passing game. We couldn't have our running game. It was always something. But this week we got to stick with our game plan.''

The Redskins are 4-0 when Portis runs for 100 yards and 0-8 when he doesn't. He was limited to 37 yards on 17 carries in Washington's 28-6 loss in Philadelphia on Nov. 21.

Ramsey couldn't get much going in that game, his first start in place of Mark Brunell, but is coming off his best performance of the season. He completed 19 of 22 passes, threw for three touchdowns and did not commit a turnover against the Giants.

``We're playing a serious team this week,'' Ramsey said. ``Just a great football team. You want to see what we did last week, how we can build upon that, and see how we can test ourselves against a great team.''

Here is a quote from Joe Gibbs...

I would say that we are our own worst enemy from the following standpoint: We just haven’t been able to get in the end zone with any big plays on offense in terms of running and throwing. We have been very inconsistent in the passing game, which is a process. Then, at different times, we have had turnover problems which can cost you ballgames.

So many times in life adversity is part of what we deal with. It is how you deal with it, how you come out the other side. So when you make commitments, I think you fight your way through it.

Amen.

Joe Gibbs, the head coach of the Redskins, won three Super Bowls in 12 years, and was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on Jan. 26, 1996. Gibbs's induction marked the highest honor in his profession. Joe is going to show who the Coach today.

If Ramsey just slows down the REDSKINS are going to win this game.

How about that interception.

The Redskins are 4-0 when Portis runs for 100 yards and 0-8 when he doesn't. He was limited to 37 yards on 17 carries in Washington's 28-6 loss in Philadelphia on Nov. 21.

Guest Theisman will you please shut up

In this week's Q&A session, the Redskins' assistant head coach-defense previews this Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles and discusses some of the Pro Bowl-worthy players on defense:

Q: What were your impressions of how Shawn Springs fared against Terrell Owens the last game?

A: "He played very well last time. A lot of it had to do with the scheme that we tried to play around him. This time we will try to use some of the same things but you always have to try and adapt and stay ahead. They understand that we snuck up on them with a couple of things last time. They played very well and they are very hot right now. We are going to do everything we can to direct the ball other places."

On the defensive side this team brought two great defensive minded coaches, assistant head coach Gregg Williams and defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Greg Blache to help improve the defense. They also signed a pair of linebackers, including one of the most underrated linebackers in the NFL, Marcus Washington, who came over from Indianapolis. Washington, who played in a defense last year that gave Dwight Freeney all the credit, racked up 6 sacks and 55 tackles last year. They also signed 12 year veteran Michael Barrow, who lead the NFC in tackles last year, to anchor the middle line backing position that was previously run by recently released Jeremiah Trotter. Barrow should help this team a lot in the middle due to his great field awareness racking up 148 tackles last year which was more than Trotter who lead the Redskins in tackles with 113.

Too bad LaVar Arrington was declared inactive for Sunday night's game, the 11th consecutive game that the Pro Bowl linebacker has missed as a result of arthroscopic knee surgery in late September.

Arrington returned to practice last week, but even with three days of work with the scout team, team officials decided that he was not conditioned well enough for game action.

#5 Donovan McNabb

A multi-dimensional threat from the quarterback

position, Donovan McNabb can make

plays with his arm, his feet, his

strength, his toughness, and his creativity.

His leadership and play-making

ability has helped raise the standards

of success of this

franchise since 1999, when the

Eagles chose him with the 2nd overall

pick in the draft. Along the way,

McNabb has become one of

the NFL’s most recognizable

and elite players, and was

rewarded with a lucrative, 12-year contract

extension in 2002. A four-time Pro

Bowler who has led the Eagles to three

NFC Championship game appearances

and more postseason wins (5)

than any other quarterback in team

history, the youthful McNabb has his

eyes focused on even loftier goals.

The Redskins have quietly adjusted their run game after forcing Clinton Portis to run the fabled "counter trey", which requires patience by the runner to wait for blocks to form and the ability to cut back. The Redskins are now tinkering with the Colts' patented "stretch play". Portis is a north/south runner who likes to hit the hole quickly, and on the stretch play he can do that without having to worry about cutting back against the grain.

Career Highlights

Ramsey solidified himself as one of the brightest and toughest young quarterbacks in the NFL after a promising season in 2003 as the Redskins full-time starting quarterback. The Redskins first round pick in 2002, Ramsey has started 16 games and appeared in 20 during his two-year career. He has completed 296-of-564 passes for 3,705 yards and 23 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, translating into a 74.2 quarterback rating. Last season he emerged as the teams' undisputed starter, and flourished before being hampered by a foot injury that made him miss five games. In his 11 starts, Ramsey threw for 2,166 yards on 179-of-337 passing with 14 scores and nine interceptions. He put his name on the map of young quarterbacks very early in the season, when he led the Redskins to a close victory over the Jets on national television then followed up with a 356-yard passing performance in a victory over Atlanta the following week. He also emerged as a team leader on the field and in the community.

How Acquired: Selected by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft (32nd overall).
