Bethesda Metro - NEW ENTRANCE

Recommended Posts

The Bethesda Station is the 3rd busiest in Montgomery County, but only has one entrance.

The fully approved plan to add a second entrance located at the corner of Elm Street and Wisconsin Avenue will require considerable expense and construction downtime to complete. The $60 million needed for the additional entrance will be paid for by the county (mostly with borrowed money; already kicked in $5 million from the county liquor board fund).

More debate ensues upon consideration of why WMATA's un-approved plan to add a new "Purple" line to the Washington DC Metrorail System, would at all affect the now fully-approved plan for a 2nd entrance at Bethesda.

For now WMATA is saying that the design, planning, and completion schedule of the 2nd entrance is completely dependent upon the approval of the development of a new Purple Line.

You see the delema. WMATA appears to have acquired funding for a project that is fully dependent on an un-approved project.

Here is a map of what the proposed Purple Line will look like. The line will connect the Red (Bethesda and Silver Spring), Green (College Park), and Orange (New Carrollton) lines.

Of course, the Purple Line has not been officially approved which makes you wonder why $5 million has already been collected.

The government always gives way to much money for studies. That is just a way to appease the developers. I for one will not like it going through our neighborhood.

JW,

Your concern is understandable - it's the NIMBY syndrome - but like it or not, proximity to a Metro line directly effects, on the upside, home values.
