Thursday Night Bonfires on the Beach - FREE

Ocean City, MD – The Town of Ocean City’s weekly Bonfires on the Beach program will begin its 2009 season on Thursday, July 9 at 9 p.m. on the beach at N. Division St. with representatives from the Ocean City Emergency Services Department as guest speakers. The event is free for the whole family to enjoy.


This will be the eighth season of Ocean City’s Bonfires on the Beach. Each Thursday evening from July 9 though August 27, the town presents the bonfire program at 9 p.m. on the beach at North Division Street, just steps from the world-famous Boardwalk. Attendees are encouraged to bring beach chairs and or blankets and gather around the bonfire, where each week a different program is offered.


Following the Emergency Services program on July 9 to kick on the season, the following programs are planned: July 16, National Aquarium; July 23, Ocean City Department of Tourism on the history of Ocean City and fun things to do; July 30, Ocean City Beach Patrol; August 6, Ocean City Police Department’s bike patrol, mounted police and canine unit; August 13, Ocean City Fire Department; August 20, Ocean City Fire Marshal and August 27, Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department.

I never got why bonfires were illegal on the beach in Ocean City - San Diego and La Jolla sure don't have problems with them: on any given summer or fall night you'll see a half dozen bonfires on every beach with between 4-50 people gathered around roasting the marshmallow - families, children, fishermen, dogs ... everything/everyone is welcome and there never seems to be a problem.

Just my 2 cents.
