Call to Service

Guest Michelle Obama

One week from today, on January 19th, Barack and I will join thousands of people all across the country for an extraordinary day of service.

Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are committing to renew America together, one community at a time.

Whatever service activity you organize or take part in -- cleaning up a park, giving blood, volunteering at a homeless shelter, or mentoring an at-risk youth -- you can help start this important journey. But this is about more than just a single day of service, it's the beginning of ongoing commitment to your community.

Monday, January 19th, is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dr. King taught us to live a life of service, and he led by example. He once said:

"If you want to be important -- wonderful. If you want to be recognized -- wonderful. If you want to be great -- wonderful. But, recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness."

Barack and I will be volunteering in Washington, D.C., our new home. I hope you'll join us by taking part in this national call to service in your community:

It will take ordinary citizens working together with a common purpose to get this country back on track. This national day of service is an important first step in our continuing commitment.

Now is the time to remind all Americans what ordinary people can accomplish when we stand together.

Thank you,

Michelle

P.S. -- If you are already planning to be in Washington, D.C. for the Inauguration, text SERVE to 56333 to receive information about service opportunities in the nation's capital. Or you can learn more here:

MLK Day of Service at Shaw Jr. High School

(Day of Service - January 19)

Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." -Martin Luther King Jr.

We hope you will join us this year as we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King by making a day OFF and make it a day ON. We will organize and prepare at Shaw Junior High School. You can choose to help organize 10s of thousands of library books or to put together emergency/disaster relief kits and healthy snack bags to help keep the students in DC safe in the case of an emergency (the healthy snack bags will be donated to DC Central Kitchens Healthy returns program).

Rashi says unclothed a man comes into the world, and unclothed he leaves it; after all his toil he carries away nothing except the deeds he leaves behind. Our actions at our MLK Day of Service indeed have left behind a positive change.

Volunteer with Veterans for America and the Obama Team on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

(Day of Service - January 19)

On the eve of President-elect Obama's historic Inauguration, our troops are still fighting two wars overseas and returning home to inadequate care, a cycle of repeated deployments with insufficient dwell time between tours, and the difficult task of ensuring that their combat-related needs are properly addressed by the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, their states, and communities.

Veterans for America (VFA) will be working to ensure that the incoming administration makes improving care for our troops and veterans a top priority. The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., however, has shown us that while government has the primary responsibility of tend to our nation's war-related needs, we as citizens can make a big difference in own communities to help our fellow citizens. The power is in our hands as well.

With that in mind, President-elect Obama has called on all Americans to honor Dr. King by participating in the National Day of Service on January 19th, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Specifically, the Presidential Inauguration Committee has asked Veterans for America to be part of this great volunteer effort. We, in turn, call upon you.

VFA recently released The American Veterans and Servicemembers Survival Guide, a free downloadable 599-page book that covers everything returning servicemembers need to know about serving as an active-duty member or being a veteran in the current age -- from obtaining help with education or housing to getting benefits and treatment for psychological wounds of war and traumatic brain injury, the signature injuries of the post 9/11 period.

The New York Times recently lauded the Guide as "a powerful updating of that old tradition" of veterans helping veterans. The Times also stated that when it comes to navigating the maze of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, "it is heartening to see that one promising form of help has indeed arrived: a 599-page guide to veterans."

While the book is available for free download, this information will not reach enough of the hundreds of thousands of returning troops -- and their families -- that need it if it stays primarily in the digital realm.

We all know the power of boots on the ground. That's why we're asking for you to lace yours up and help us spread the word regarding the Survival Guide in the DC area.

Time: Monday, January 19 from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Host: Jason Forrester

Location: Veterans for Ameria, Logan Circle (Washington, DC)
