Beltway Question

Recommended Posts

I have a question for those who travel the capitol beltway on a regular basis.

We will be traveling from the eastern shore to the Front Royal Area (from Rt. 50W to 66W) on a weekday morning.

Do you recommend that we travel north (MD) or south(VA) of the city on the beltway?

According to my trip software, there is only a difference of about 5 miles, with the southern route a little bit longer.

Thanks, dmassie

I would go North towards Baltimore and loop South towards Bethesda.

There is another way, but it is tricky and would not advise it.

Take Route 50 straight into the District.

Route 50 turns into New York Avenue

Pass North Capitol Street.

Get in left lane.

Make left onto 395 South.

Make sure not to speed there is a camera after the first tunnel.

Stay in the Right hand lane.

Take the SW Parkway which is still 395 South.

Once you get on the ramp go over two lanes and stay on 395 South

Once you begin crossing the Potomac River on the 14th Street Bridge get in the Right hand lane.

Get on the George Washington Parkway North.

Go approximately 3 miles and you will see a I-66 Sign on your left
