  1. Interesting thoughts on Ronald Reagan's take of the 4th Amendment. Reagan believed that our Country would only grow stronger with a well-informed public. Read more on his thoughts regarding the 4th Amendment, his admiration of James Madison, and his thoughts on the "Freedom of Information Act'' here. http://www.whitehousechristmasornament.com/content/Ronald-Reagan-Views-on-Fourth-Amendment.html
  2. 2011-2012 Redskins Season

Another football season is here and we are all hopeful that the Redskins will finish above .500 but after watching the quarterback play last night it seems we are headed for 4-12 or 6-10 at best. John Beck looked lost and if he is our starting quarterback this season is going to be painfully long. And someone tell Banks he needs to actually get into the end zone before celebrating.
  3. Whirlpool moving to Mexico

1000 Americans just lost their jobs. Whirlpool stated that one of the main reason they are shutting down their U.S. plant is "aggressive pricing actions of global competitors -- some of whose trade practices are currently under investigation by the U.S. government."

  8. DC VegFest

The DC VegFest is a FREE outdoor festival celebrating the very best of everything vegetarian in and around the nation's capital. There are so many reasons to choose vegetarian foods "for our health, the planet, and animals" and Washington, D.C. offers wonderful opportunities to explore meatless cuisine. The DC VegFest has something for everyone to enjoy, so bring along your family and friends, including your furry four-legged companions! What can you expect throughout the day? In addition to lots of food, friends, and fun, the schedule is now online -- and it's jam-packed with dynamic speakers, fantastic cooking demos, and many opportunities for book signings. Opening the event is local favorite NBC4-TV anchor Wendy Rieger who is joining us for the third year in row! After she kicks off the 2011 DC VegFest, we'll dive into the inner world of animals with animal behavior expert, Jonathan Balcombe followed by a cooking demo by Brennan Gerald. Next up is Colleen Patrick-Goudreau who will share with us the joys and ease of transitioning to a plant-based diet, encouraging everyone to take her 30-Day Vegan Challenge! Then we'll go inside for a fun interactive quiz about the latest in human nutrition, hosted by Dr. Michael Greger who will also be offering free cholesterol tests throughout the day at his NutritionFacts.org booth. Shifting back outside, Dawn Moncrieffe will briefly share with us details about her research project linking meat production with higher gas prices. And we'll then be joined by Wayne Pacelle who will discuss his new book, The Bond: Our Kindship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them. Then get ready for a Vegan with a Vengeance cooking demo by Isa Chandra Moskowitz! And Maryland Delegate Aruna Miller will inspire us to get more politically active, empowering us to reach out to our elected representatives about the importance of taking steps to protect our health, the planet and animals.

  14. Poet Maya Angelou is upset with one of the inscription on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington DC. The inscription Angelou is upset with reads "I was a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness." This is part of a quote that Dr. King delivered at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1968. The entire quote is "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice, say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter." According to Maya Angelou the omission of "if" in the inscription on the Wall of Quotes changes the meaning of Dr. King's words and in her option makes him "look like an arrogant twit" and "minimizes the man." The inscription is one of 14 quotes carved on the monument's Wall of Quotes.

  20. Tips for Restaurant Week Make your reservations early because many restaurants get booked up fast. Read the menus and reviews online so you know what you are getting into. Restaurant Week offers great deals at some of the priciest restaurants in Washington, DC but some only offer pre-fixed selections. Note that the cost for your meal is set and to only order from the specific Restaurant Week menu. Lunch will be $20.11 per person and Dinner is $35.11 per person. Not all restaurants in the Washington DC area participate in Restaurant Week. Some also only offer specials at either lunch or dinner not both. Make sure you ask (when making your reservation) is the restaurant you picked is offering Restaurant Week Specials. Many of the participating restaurants actually extend their Restaurant Week Specials an additional week so if you cannot make a reservation ask about the promotional dates and if they are extending the Restaurant Week deals.
  21. Tim - I watched the trailer and think your movie looks pretty good. How are you doing with the ticket sales so far? You should also post this on the DCpages Events Calendar, it is free and will get you even more exposure.
  22. UPDATE: Pre and Post-Dedication Concert Schedule On August 28th, 2011 more than 250,000 visitors will be in Washington, DC to celebrate the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial on the 48th anniversary of King's "I Have A Dream" speech. This historic event will begin with a pre-dedication concert at 10am. followed by the dedication ceremony which will begin at 11 am. A post-dedication concert is then scheduled to begin at 2 pm. Dr. King's Memorial is located on a four-acre plot on the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin. It is adjacent to the Roosevelt Memorial and creates a "line of leadership" from the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech to the Jefferson Memorial. The Stone of Hope, from which Dr. King's image emerges, will gaze over the Tidal Basin toward the horizon as a symbol of a future society of justice and equality. The memorial will also feature an Inscription Wall with fourteen of Dr. King’s most influential quotes, engraved on a 450-foot crescent shaped granite wall. The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, a Washington-based nonprofit organization coordinated the designing, funding and constructing the memorial. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is only the third non-president to be commemorated with a memorial on the National Mall and the first ever African-American to be honored this way. 23. U.S.A. WORLD CUP

I'm not sure what to think of the U.S. performance at the World Cup. I guess it’s good that we made it out of group play but losing to Ghana (again) kind of stings because all the announcers thought the United States would win. Is the U.S. team ever going to play at the level of Germany, Brazil, or other top-tier teams? The U.S. gave up yet another early goal and some of that has to lie on the coach. Bradley's team consistently came out flat and gave up early goals. You cannot be successful in the World Cup giving away goals.
  24. The Historical Society of Washington DC (located at 801 K Street, NW) is having an Art Exhibition this year featuring Han-Mee Artists. The exhibition runs from March 19th thru June 11th with an opening reception on March 19th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The blooming of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. has come to symbolize the natural beauty of our Nation's Capital. The famous trees, a gift from Japan in 1912, signal Washington's rite of spring with an explosion of life and color that surrounds the Tidal Basin in a sea of pale pink and white blossoms. Thousands of visitors from across the nation and around the world come here to witness the spectacle. These magnificent cherry trees and their history in Washington, D.C. is the theme of this art exhibition. Visit the Historical Society of Washington DC and see this fine exhibit: Celebration of D.C.'s Cherry Blossom Trees.
  25. The Tidal Basin is accessible by the following routes: Interstate 395 from the South Interstate 495, New York Avenue, Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, and the Cabin John Parkway from the North Interstate 66, U.S. Routes 50 and 29 from the West U.S. Routes 50, 1, and 4 provide access from the East Park in the middle of the cherry blossoms along East Potomac Park and enjoy FREE shuttle service from the Hains Point parking area to the Tidal Basin terminus area. Shuttles run March 26 – April 10 from 10 AM to 7 PM daily at 30 to 40 minute intervals, with several designated hop-on/hop-off stops along the way to and from each destination.
