  6. The League of Washington Theatre's and Theatre Communications Group Present WASHINGTON, D.C.’S First Annual Free Night of Theater 23 TheateRs Offer More Than 1800 FREE tickets WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Washington Theatres is pleased to announce Washington, D.C.’s first annual Free Night of Theater, to be held Thursday, October 19, 2006. Presented in conjunction with Theatre Communications Group (TCG), Free Night of Theater will offer theatregoers free tickets to more than 23 Washington-area theatres. Washington, D.C., is one of several communities across the country participating in the event, an unprecedented campaign to attract new audiences to live theatre. (Note: Because of production schedules, some theatres will offer Free Night of Theater performances after October 19.) Theatregoers will be able to reserve tickets through the League of Washington Theatres website, www.lowt.org, beginning at noon on Sunday, October 1, 2006. Patrons can reserve up to 2 free tickets and are encouraged to visit a theatre that they have never attended. Once tickets have been reserved through the website, patrons will be able to pick up their tickets at the individual theatre’s box office on the night of the show. As of September 5, more than 1800 tickets (valued at more than $67,000) have been pledged for Free Night of Theater. Participating theatres include: African Continuum Theatre Company, Arena Stage, Catalyst Theater Company, Charter Theatre, Folger Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, GALA Hispanic Theatre, Imagination Stage, Keegan Theatre, MetroStage, Olney Theatre Center, Rep Stage, Rorschach Theatre, Round House Theatre, Scena Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, Studio Theatre, Teatro de la Luna, Theater J, Washington Shakespeare Company, Washington Stage Guild and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. “We’re thrilled to offer 1800 free theatre tickets to Washington-area audiences,” said Kevin Moore, President of the League of Washington Theatres. “We hope this program will allow ‘first-timers’ to see their first live theatre performance while giving regular theatregoers a chance to attend theatres they haven’t been to before.” "TCG's Free Night of Theater is an innovative way to explore the depth and breadth of Washington's dynamic theatre community,” said Molly Smith, TCG Board Member and Artistic Director of Arena Stage. “By swinging open our doors, this is our chance to thank both the local community and our national audience for their many years of support. Whether you're a first-time theatregoer or a dedicated patron, I hope that you find this an offer too good to refuse." This year’s event builds on TCG’s successful debut of the program in 2005, when more than 8,000 people attended 150 performances in Austin, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The 2006 program participants include the following communities: Cities: Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Cleveland, OH; Lexington, KY; Los Angeles, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Sacramento, CA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; and Washington, D.C. States: Connecticut, Oregon, New Jersey, North Carolina, Wisconsin. Free Night of Theater was conceived at TCG’s National Conference in 2003 as a way to remove perceived barriers that have historically prevented audiences from attending not-for-profit theatre. An estimated 80 percent of last year’s attendees were first-time theatregoers, and they were enthusiastically welcomed by their fellow audience members. Recent attendance research gathered by Shugoll Research reports that more than 33 percent of last year’s first-time theatregoers purchased tickets to another performance following their Free Night experience. In fact, 98 percent of attendees to the 2005 program reported that they would take part in Free Night of Theater 2006. According to Brad Erickson, executive director of Theatre Bay Area and participant in last year’s pilot program, “The support was extraordinary, from our local theatre companies and the broader community. The demand from the public for this kind of live artistic experience was overwhelming … tickets went so fast, we had to go back to our companies and ask for more!” For more information on Washington, D.C.’s Free Night of Theater, visit the League of Washington Theatre’s website at www.lowt.org. League of Washington Theatres The League of Washington Theatres is an association of nonprofit professional theatres in the greater-Washington area. The League was established in 1982 to create greater public awareness, appreciation and support for theatre in the Washington area. For almost 20 years, the members of the League have been at the center of an exciting, expanding, nationally acclaimed theatre community. The League encompasses a total of 48 members: 40 producing theatres and 8 affiliates. The League received The Washington Post Award for Distinguished Community Service at the 1999 Helen Hayes Awards for its Stages for All Ages program. Theatre Communications Group Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American theatre, offers a wide array of services in line with its mission: to strengthen, nurture and promote the professional not-for-profit American theatre. Artistic programs support theatres and theatre artists by awarding approximately $3 million in grants annually, and offer career development programs for artists. Management programs provide professional development opportunities for theatre leaders through workshops, conferences, forums and publications, as well as industry research on the finances and practices of the American not-for-profit theatre. Advocacy, conducted in conjunction with the dance, presenting, opera and symphony orchestra fields, includes guiding lobbying efforts and providing theatres with timely alerts about legislative developments. The country’s leading independent press specializing in dramatic literature, TCG’s publications include American Theatre magazine, the ArtSEARCH employment bulletin, plays, translations and theatre reference books. As the U.S. Center of UNESCO’s International Theatre Institute, a worldwide network, TCG supports cross-cultural exchange through travel grants and other assistance to traveling theatre professionals. Through these programs, TCG seeks to increase the organizational efficiency of its member theatres, cultivate and celebrate the artistic talent and achievements of the field, and promote a larger public understanding of and appreciation for the theatre field. TCG serves more than 440 member theatres nationwide. More information about TCG is available at www.tcg.org. Redskin Players and Coaches Should Feel Shame

Not trying to show your hand and not showing up or two different things. The Redskins need to get the act together before the Vikings game. The division is too tough to lose ground in even if it is the first week. I hope Al Saunders can call a play where our o-line doesn't look lost.
  8. MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid wants to talk to David Beckham about a contract extension. The former England captain has said he wants to stay with the Spanish team after his contract expires at the end of the season. "The intention from the club is to sit down and discuss a new deal," Beckham spokesman Simon Oliveira said Monday. "Nothing's been discussed yet." Earlier Monday, it was incorrectly reported that Beckham had agreed to a two-year extension. Real Madrid, which has not won a trophy in three years, wants to keep Beckham mainly for his value as a soccer player, not his marketing allure, Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said. ``Of course, the criteria were based on sports. Marketing issues are important but in this Real Madrid sports aspects take priority,'' Calderon said Sunday night. Beckham joined Real Madrid in 2003 from Manchester United. He played in Real Madrid's 0-0 tie with visiting Villarreal on Sunday in the team's opener of the Spanish league season. Beckham was replaced by Robinho in the 75th minute. Beckham captained England at the World Cup in Germany but was dropped from the team after the tournament by new coach Steve McClaren. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Redskin Players and Coaches Should Feel Shame

The Redskins loss was both embarrassing and demoralizing. What happened to our defense? Even Sean Taylor got lit up! Do we ever go through special teams coverage and drills in practice? Seriously, our kickoff coverage is worse than most college teams, other teams start at midfield! Not one single player had a good game and even studs like Taylor and Moss stunk. It was a sad game for the team and the city.

    Redskins Trade for RB Duckett

Last night the Washington Redskins' took part in a 3-team trade that aquireds RB T.J. Duckett from the Altanta Falcons. Duckett now joins a backfield that already consist of Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Mike Sellers, and Rock Cartwright. I know Portis is hurting now but I see this as a sign the Redskins are trying to replace/get rid of Betts. Duckett, the former Michigan State standout and 18th overall pick in 2002, has carried 552 times for 2,175 yards and 31 touchdowns in 54 appearances, including 14 starts. His best season was in 2002, when he ran for 779 yards and 11 touchdowns. (thank you ESPN) Here is the rest of the trade. - Altanta sent RB T.J. Duckett to Washington. - Denver sent disgruntled WR Ashley Lelie to Altanta. - Washington sent two future draft choices, most likely a third and fourth-rounder, to Denver. Just one last side note, are the Redskins ever going to use their picks or simply trade all of them.
  12. Former University of Maryland star Lonny Baxter, a native of Silver Spring, Maryland, was arrested by uniformed Secret Service agents on Wednesday after shots were fired from a vehicle about two blocks from the White House. According to a Secret Service spokesman, Baxter was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. after a witness flagged down a Secret Service agent and reported shots fired from a white sport utility vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle, which Baxter was driving, near the intersection of 17th and I streets in Northwest Washington. The Secret Service charged Baxter and his passenger, 35-year-old Irvin Martin, with carrying a handgun without a license and other firearms charges, which could lead to up to seven years in prison. "There were spent shell casings in plain view inside the vehicle," Zahren said. Officers also recovered a handgun. The 27-year-old former Terp just signed a one-year deal earlier this month with Italian team Montepaschi Siena.

Portis Hurt in 1st Preseason Game

Redskins starting running back Clinton Portis partially dislocated his shoulder in the first quarter of Sunday night's preseason game against Cincinnati. This begs the question, "Why was he in there to begin with?" Yet we all know the answer, MONEY. The NFL makes too much money in the preseason to let it go even if it means star players may receive serious injuries. "I don't know why myself or any other player of my caliber should be playing in the preseason," said Portis, a sling over his left shoulder as he departed Redskins Park. "I think for the last four years I've done enough to show the world I'm going to be ready for the season." Too many players get injured in preseason (remember Jon Jansen finishing his season before it started two years ago.) I think that at the most there should only be two preseason games and starters should not play. It is a good way to look at rookies/free agents/vet's trying to make the team but for established players there is no need. I hope that Portis will be ready for the start of the season and that this injury does not bother him for the whole season, which there is a good chance it will. Without a healthy Portis it may be a long year for the Washington Redskins.

    Nats keep key player

What do you think of the Washington Nationals keeping Alfonso Soriano? I love it. I just hope that the fans will continue to come out and support the team and perhaps the best player in baseball.

    Washington trading Alfonso Soriano?

How do you really feel about Washington trading Alfonso Soriano? Where do you think he will go? At first we heard the Yankees and Mets but now the Detroit Tigers are the leading contender? Is any deal really going to produce another player of Soriano’s caliber? I realize that the new ownership needs to rebuild the organization from the farm systems up but when are you going to ever get a player with Soriano's numbers? It’s no guarantee that you ever will. The other day, Alfonso Soriano became only the ninth player to hit 30 home runs for the franchise. He needs only seven steals to become the second 30-30 player ever, joining Vladimir Guerrero. And in times like these, when new ownership is trying to rebuild but keep fans coming to the game, the Washington Nationals need a huge star to draw interest to a losing club. Trading superstars never gets you a return worth the investment. I know Soriano is going to demand a big contract but I think he is worth it and that the franchise will only hurt itself and the fans by trading him away. We have other players to part with first, like Livan Hernandez, Jose Vidro, and Jose Guillen.

    Wizards Sign Darius Songaila

I heard he has a decent mid-range jump shot. I still think the Wizards need a big man. I thought I heard a rumor going around that the Wiz were trying to trade for Milwaukee's C Jamaal Magloire?

    Wizards Sign Darius Songaila

The Washington Wizards signed free agent forward Darius Songaila to a five-year, $23 million dollar deal. This uses up most of mid-level exception. Who is this guy? Is he really worth it? I know he played in Chi-town last year but I really do not know anything about him. Anyone have a clue????

Resource For Nannies And Nanny Employers, Find Nanny Agencies, and Nanny Jobs. Please choose an area to view Nannies and Families in your area. Nanny Salary (Remember we are only a classifieds) What you should consider: There are many variables that need to be considered when deciding a nanny's salary. Experience, Responsibilities, Number of children in the Family, Live in or Live out arrangements, area in which you live (cost of living for your nanny) and any benefits that you're offering your Nanny. Experience is the most important aspect to consider. Bottom line, this is what you are paying for. The salary that you're considering should reflect the amount of experience the nanny has. Your child(ren) are the #1 Responsibility of any Nanny you are considering to join your Family, but there may be other tasks that you may ask of the nanny. Grocery shopping, errands, laundry, housekeeping or cooking are just a few things it takes to run a household smoothly. The house and its everyday/week routines takes time, energy and organization and should be compensated. Also, does the nanny have experience in performing the tasks at hand and how well? That question can only be answered by talking to their references. Number of children in the family also needs to be a factor. The Nanny's responsibility level is raised with the amount of children that she must look after and take care of. Living arrangements for your nanny need to be addressed. Live out Nannies are generally paid more because you are not offering room, board, food and car as a benefit. Live in Nannies are paid less because you are offering them room/board and possibly a car. Area in which you live plays a part. Just as in any other job the cost of living in the area reflects your salary. Benefits that should be considered in the nanny's salary are health, vacation time, sick days, overtime, traveling and the use of a car. Average National Nanny Salaries Live in (average 45-50 hours - $400-$600 weekly) Live out (average 45-50 hours - $500-$700 weekly) Mother's helper (average - $8-13 per/hour) *Overnight Care -- Anything over regular working hours can be paid in an hourly wage or can be done on a set wage basis (if it is longer than a couple of days)

Has your web site lost its Google pagerank?

I work for a company that has been around for over 10 years. Ever since I joined the company over 3 years ago, we have always been on the first page in Google's search. A few weeks ago, we were pushed to the 17th page, basically out of existance. Community businesses that were listed and added content to our site are now suffering. No one is seeing their information because we are buried. This happened with no warning or explaination. I feel that Google should have to explain itself not only to companies like mine, but also to the public. Why did this happen? How can websites successfully climb out of the celler. Our website is rich with ontent that changes almost daily so I feel as if we have met the content requirement of relevent search. Google is not the small company they once were, they now control about 80% of all searches so they must be held accountable for their accounts. There has to at least be a valid explanation. I alos wonder why our Google PR has stayed the same yet out search resluts have been "sandboxed".
