Kerala, ‘God’s Own Country’, is blessed with immense beauty and exoticism. The capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, is itself a very famous tourist place. It is located in the South western belt of India. It is well connected with all the other cities through rail, road and air network. Thiruvananthapuram has a tropical climate due to its proximity to the sea. Due to this the city has a pleasant climate throughout the year. According to the legend, the city was associated with King Solomon. His ships were known to have landed in a port called Ophir. Right from 190 A.D. merchants have been visiting this place for trade of spices, sandalwood and ivory. The city is said to have got its name from the deity at the Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswami Temple. Thiruvananthapuram literally means the town of Anantha. The temple is one of the chief landmarks of the city. The temple is known to be several thousands of years old, though there is no solid evidence to determine the history of the temple. In the 18th century, the capital was transferred to this city from Padmanabhapuram, from when the city rose to fame. The Lord of this temple is known to be very powerful and many former kings of the Tranvancore state had devoted themselves completely in the service of the Lord. Thiruvananthapuram has a number of tourist places some of which are Kovalam beach, Napier Museum and Kuthiramalika Palace.
