May 25th, 2004 was my first day interning at DCpages.com. Each intern got to decide a historical site or museum that he or she would like to visit. I chose to go and tour the Holocaust Museum. I had never been to the museum and I thought it would be a perfect compliment to the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

The museum was an intense and enlightening experience for me. The images and displays that are present throughout the main exhibition really made me think about the horrors of the war. The museum helped to remind me that this appalling event that took place during World War II was actually true. The reason I say this is that the World War seems so aloof from my generation. The various exhibits reminded me of the fact that I was part of a century where so many violent and unspeakable acts took place. The images of all the people tortured and killed during the war made me think about how humans are so weak and one of our biggest flaws is human nature. I thought about how an insatiable hunger for power and the skill to manipulate people can carry a person such as Adolf Hitler a long way.

I would recommend this museum for everyone to visit, especially this week because Memorial Day is coming up. The museum has graphic images and videos in certain parts of the exhibit so the museum may not be suitable for the younger audience. It will be a good reminder for all to think again about how fortunate we are to be living in the present day and not a time of such enormous hate and genocide.
