The art medium Hadbakah defies placement in one of the conventional categories. It was devised by Selma Hurwitz in 1964, and during the subsequent years of use by the artist has evolved into the richly developed technique that she uses today.

Hadbakah is glued-thread painting (The word is Hebrew for "gluing"). Instead of using a brush, the artist glues various threads, especially metallized threads, one by one, to a specially prepared surface. Careful planning of thread direction and location, and meticulous maneuvering of the threads during the gluing process, achieve the desired shading and design. Changes in thread direction cause shifting reflections, and this gives the medium it's unique visual texture, often with a remarkable three-dimensional effect.

George Washington University Shows Off LCPS’ Artistic Faces

 

The work of 49 student artists from seven LCPS schools will be on display from January 16th to February 20th at the George Washington University Virginia Campus in Ashburn. LCPS Superintendent Dr. Edgar B. Hatrick III will speak during an opening reception at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 23rd.

 

The exhibit, titled "New Faces: Showcasing Young Artists in Loudoun" features work by students from Potomac Falls High School, Seneca Ridge Middle School, Horizon Elementary, Lowes Island Elementary, Meadowland Elementary, Potowmack Elementary and Sugarland Elementary.

 

The works will be housed in the campus gallery, which is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Admission for the exhibition is free.

 

The George Washington University Virginia Campus is located at 20101 Academic Way, Ashburn, off Route 7 a mile west of Route 28.

 

Presented in cooperation with the Loudoun Arts Council, the George Washington University Virginia Campus Art Series regularly features a wide range of fine arts and crafts by local artists, which are chosen by a jury of art professionals. To date, the GW Art Series has showcased fine arts and fine crafts of more than 65 local artists and 300 student artists. This year, the GW Virginia Campus is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with several special art shows.

SEPTEMBER 2003 - BORIS ZAKIC

The Washington debut of painter Boris Zakic, the Best of Show winner at last year's Georgetown International Fine Arts Competition, selected by Stacey Schmidt, Asst. Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Zakic is a very young brilliant painter who is an Asst. Professor of Art at Georgetown College in Kentucky who delivers astounding photorealism coupled with intelligent ideas and messages. His style harks back to the Renaissance with its impressive attention to absolute skill and detail - bit its imagery and composition makes the content very contemporary. The constant theme in Zakic's work is the integration of text - usually a single word - with an image - most often a figure. A reception for Zakic will be held on Friday, September 19 from 6-9 PM.

Department faculty are active both on campus and off: presenting their work, participating in group shows, and researching in the field.

 

 

Colby Caldwell is included in three group shows in 2003: "Situation Room", at Boyden Gallery here at St. Mary's College, "Art on the Digital Edge", at the Art Academy Museum, in Easton MD, and "bisect" at Fusebox, Washington, DC. His solo show, "songs", was chosen as one of the "Top Ten art shows of 2002" in Washington, DC by the City Paper.

 

Amanda Guyton completed her Ph.D. dissertation "Bharhut: Narrative and Pilgrimage in Ancient India" at the University of Virginia in July 2003.

Sue Johnson had a one-person exhibition of The Alternate Encyclopedia at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, March-May 2003, and The Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana, July-Sept 2002. Selected works were included in Insecta Magnifica at the Glyndor Gallery at Wave Hill, Bronx, New York, and Neo-naturalism at The Orange Art Center, Orange, Virginia. In 2003 she was awarded a residency fellowship by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Amherst, Virginia.

 

Joe Lucchesi curated the show, "Amazons in the Drawing Room: The Art of Romaine Brooks," at the National Museum for Women in the Arts and the University Museums at the University of California, Berkeley.

 

Lisa Scheer is working on a public sculpture commission for the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, New York.

Is it just me, or has Sugarloaf lost some of it's charm? The last show I went to, there were booths with manufactured silver jewelry (starting at $5.00) and garden stakes ($2.99). When I contacted Sugarloaf, I was told that I must have mistaken them for some other show. Mistaking Sugarloaf at the Expo Center with another show is quite a feat.
