The National Memorial Day Parade will commence May 29 to pay tribute to American veterans from the American Revolution to Operation Iraqi Freedom and to honor active duty military personnel and all those who have died defending the United States. This year, for the first time, returning troops from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan will be marching in the parade. The Department of Defense will be bringing approximately 600 recently returned personnel representing the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Army National Guard to participate in the event. Guests and family members of the troops will be seated in VIP bleachers next to the reviewing stand.

Notable veterans from WWI through Desert Storm will serve as grand marshals alongside grand marshal Gary Sinise, the Emmy award- winning actor and film director who is often noted for his efforts in raising awareness about the sacrifices made by members of the military and paying homage to their work.

I just moved to DC, and I am still trying to get around. I would hate to miss my first Washington DC parade opportunity. When is the Memorial Day Parade This year and where do I go to see it?

If you will be in Washington, DC on Memorial Day 2010, you have the unique opportunity to be part of the parade of the year!

It takes hundreds and hundreds of willing hands and feet to make this large parade a success. We are looking for many volunteers to help in the assembly area, along the parade route, and in the parade's dispersal area near the White House.

We are looking for hard-working and focused individuals, and if you have management experience, so much the better! You might sweat, but you will have fun!

Each volunteer will get a special Parade T-shirt and (most importantly) a chance to meet and thank personally those who have served, and sacrificed, to keep our country free.

If you wish more information about volunteering to be part of this parade, please email us to request a volunteer form, or call 703-302-1012 ext. 227.

Is the parade route still the same as the map two posts above? Also can you bring sitting chairs to the city to set up for the Memorial Day Parade?
