Venezuela is a state sponsor of terrorism

This is a clear and present danger.

Just weeks after reports that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez invited Iran to place missiles within its borders aimed at the U.S., the Obama Administration continues to coddle thugocrat Chavez, this time with press accounts of chummy conversations, smiles, and handshakes between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chavez at the inauguration of Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff.

Congressman Connie Mack (FL -14), the incoming Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, said:

“Secretary Clinton got it wrong when she kissed the wife of terrorist Yasser Arafat in 1999 and she got it wrong when she cozied up to thugocrat Hugo Chavez on Saturday. Clinton and Obama should cease coddling terrorists and cease refusing to place Venezuela on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Clinton’s handshakes and Obama’s jokes about diverting Air Force One to visit his friend Hugo Chavez tells me that this Administration is out of touch with the serious threat Chavez poses to our nation.”

In a letter to his Congressional colleagues on December 10, 2010, Mack renewed his calls for Venezuela to be designated as a state sponsor of terrorism after news reports surfaced that Iran is planning to place medium-range missiles on Venezuelan soil.

According to the November 25th edition of the German daily, Die Welt, Venezuela has agreed to allow Iran to establish a military base manned by Iranian missile officers, soldiers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and Venezuelan missile officers. The article states that the previously undisclosed contract provides for the establishment of a jointly-operated military base in Venezuela and the joint development of ground-to-ground missiles.

Mack is a sponsor of legislation (H.Res. 872) calling on the Obama Administration to designate Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism.
